I'm not one to worry too much about Terminator scenarios. I don't think that's the threat AI poses.

Mostly I think it just devalues human activity, and leads to the elimination of all purpose in society. I was never that concerned about a reduction in birthrate before AI (we can adapt to less people and develop policies around it) but after AI, it’s a different story. Now you have people suggesting using AI to raise and monitor our children? Why even have kids at all, if you are so disengaged?

We already have students using AI to cheat, and teachers and professors using AI to evaluate the cheating. Regular education (despite whatever flaws and limitations it may have) is being systematically destroyed. No wonder the kids are booing at graduation. Next we have lawyers and judges using AI. There are restrictions on this, but it’s already happening. Government officials are producing reports based on AI. Why even bother having a legal system or a government?

And as bad as all that was, now we have this. AI producing potentially lethal biological agents.

If any coherent society still exists, anywhere in the world, it needs to ban AI, and take an aggressive posture against any other society failing to do so.

Obviously no one should be physically attacked.

But if you wear privacy invading glasses in public (Google Glass/Meta Ray-ban), don't be surprised if you are. If you take robo cars and treat your fellow human beings like crap, don't be surprised when you are treated the same.

Moral of the story, if you don't want to get your ass kicked, don't be an ahole.

Seriously, the decision is being based on The Winter War from 85 years ago? If there are fake contributers, remove them. If you are removing real Russian contributors to the kernel *because* they are Russian, where does that end? There is no EV slump. Electric vehicles sales continue to accelerate. Worldwide sales seem to have gone from around just over 10 million in 2022, to just under 14 mllion in 2023. A dramatic increase. (Source: International Energy Agency, chart below)

The slump is in American and European EV sales. Because, aside from Tesla, Western EVs are overpriced and underfeatured. They have inconsistent, faulty software, and are generally less reliable than gas cars. Also, they are being sold at a considerable loss, again, aside from Tesla. They can't reach profitability without scale, and they can't reach scale without the capital investments needed to do so.

The article should be more closely called "Western Car Makers fall behind as global EV Sales Explode".

You're obviously not a woman. If Elon can stop death and rape threats against women, and unban women fighting for the basic human rights of women and girls, this will be a win. He's said this won't be a free-for-all, and illegal speech will not be tolerated. If twitter has been so "woke", why has such horrible abuse of women been tolerated on the platform? Last I checked threats of death and violent sexual assault are against the law, and I don't imagine they will tolerated under the new management.

They were obviously so inspired by the movie The Martian, they thought they could go back in time and get the program launched a few years ago. Give them some more time and they might just pull it off. :)

Biggest waste of money in a long time. Besides what everyone else has already said, this is a useless plane for Canada, yet our goverment has been pursuing it for over 10 years. (Conservatives now, Liberals previously) In the arctic it helps to have a reliable aircraft. The old CF-18s have two engines so they can survive an engine failure, the new, wonderful F-35s have a single engine and don't work particularly well in cold temperatures. If the engine fails, you crash. So they suck for Canada, but I guess they are intended for use overseas, when we are helping the US to bomb miscellaneous countries. But apparently they suck for that too. Oh, and the software sucks, and we depend on the US to fix it.

I say cancel the bloody project and give money to Canadian companies to produce our own plane. We have companies and people with the experience and skills to do this, and it might just create a few more jobs. We should have done this 20 years ago, but it's not too late. And when we finally get a good product, we owe no-one, and maybe, if they ask nice, we might sell them to the US. But we'll probably have too many orders from Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, so the US will have to wait. They do have a shady credit history after all.

Don't visit the US! I've had a great experience visiting Cuba. Hell, some people probably had a better experience visiting East Germany.

This plane is an ef'ing joke, at least from my perspective as Canadian ex-military. Does not operate well in cold weather, and has only one engine. If you lose an engine while patrolling the arctic, you go down. This is an overpriced, overcomplicated piece of shit. Our government has produced at least two reports that have stated that this is an inappropriate and overpriced solution for what we need, yet regardless the federal government (across two parties) seems to keep trying to back it, and even now, another report is surfacing suggesting this might change.

Small, stupid suggestion: Screw this boondoggle, and pay Canadian companies to produce a world-class, well-designed and actually useful aircraft to replace the well-performing, but old, CF-18s. And if the US doesn't like it, too bad.

Add to that special helmets? By a country engaged in war-crimes and atrocities? Yeah, that will sell it.
