Comment Re:more likely from Kenya than Canada (Score 2) 254

Kenya or Ethiopia. Every human being to ever run less than 2:05 is from one of those countries.

Not true. Ryan Hall (a USian) ran 2:04:58. Even though we got halfway there in the last 17 years, it's important to consider that there has been a massive movement of focus from 10k to the marathon for many athletes during that time due to increased money only in the marathon, and in 1998 the marathon record was slightly soft compared with the track events. Also let's not forget that the rate of improvement will slow down as times get faster, otherwise we'll run the race in zero seconds somewhere before the year 3000. The most important race determining when a sub-2 happens is that between the drug cheats and the drug testers. Without being able to predict that gap, it will be tough to guess when sub-2 occurs. Most records currently happen in Berlin, but a straighter course would help, as would one that exploits the allowed elevation drop of 42m. As a 45 year old runner, I'm optimistic of seeing a sub-2 in my lifetime.

Branson states that "you go from 0 to 3500mph in 8 seconds". That's ~20g. You go first Beardie. He also states that you'll know you're in space (over 100km) because you'll float. Incorrect, you'll float because you're in free fall, even though you're not going orbital speed. It's possible to fly higher than 100km with your arse firmly stuck to your seat. Think I'll wait for the space elevator.

Synaptic Dropped From Ubuntu 11.10 360

An anonymous reader links to a story at Techie Buzz according to which (quoting): "When Canonical started developing the Ubuntu Software Center, I knew that a time will come when it will completely replace Synaptic. The Software Center is a noob-friendly replacement for Synaptic where users can discover new applications more easily. Unexpectedly, Canonical has decided that it is time for the Software Center to replace Synaptic as well. So, in the next daily build of Ubuntu 11.10, Synaptic will no longer be installed by default. The Ubuntu Software Center still lacks many important features that are present in Synaptic."

Mars Journal Issue Inspires Hundreds of One-Way Trip Volunteers 475

Velcroman1 writes "An interplanetary trip to Mars could take as little as 10 months, but returning would be virtually impossible — making the voyage a form of self-imposed exile from Earth unlike anything else in human history. What would inspire someone to volunteer? A special edition of the Journal of Cosmology detailed exactly how a privately-funded, one-way mission to Mars could depart as soon as 20 years from now — and it prompted more than 400 readers to volunteer as colonists. 'I've had a deep desire to explore the universe ever since I was a child and understood what a rocket was,' said Peter Greaves, the father of three, and a jack-of-all-trades who started his own motorcycle dispatch company and fixes computers and engines on the side. 'I envision life on Mars to be stunning, frightening, lonely, quite cramped and busy,' he said. Given the difficulties of the mission, Lana Tao, the editor of the Journal, said she was surprised by the response. 'At first we thought the e-mails were a joke... then we realized they were completely serious.'" Of course, they'd have to compete with the thousands of you who said you'd go.
