Journal Journal: My meeting with Dr. Vinton Cerf, co-founder of Internet.
A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Vinton Cerf, commonly known as the co-founder of Intenet (Dr. Cerf never seems to call it " The Internet", just "Internet"), speak at the Empire Club in Toronto, ON, Canada. I hung around for a while afterwards in hopes of meeting him, and in fact did. We spoke for a few minutes, along with a couple of my coworkers, then headed down the elevator with him before he was whisked away to the airport. Given the number of folks that will never get to meet him, I felt rather priveledged.
I won't go into detail about what he talked about during his speech (if the link isn't broken, you should be able to find the speech here), but since it was such a thrill to meet the man that started it all, I figured I should jot it down somewhere.
The speech was to a room of about 350 industry professionals (mostly), and I (and many others) noticed that while it contained a good amount of tech references, any general internet user would have clearly understood him. I don't imagine that's a very common thing with people of such high intellect in a given field. A very well rounded, gracious and inspiring person indeed.
