Journal Journal: How to use Slashdot (or how to get rid of it) 7

It's unfortunate that the "default" Slashdot has tranformed itself into a container for stupidity and lack of content, losing its original glamour in the process, mostly because of the flawed moderation system, which, while trying to solve a problem, created worse ones, such as the disgusting karma whores and funny modded posts.

The standard Slashdot user configuration sets the burden of getting rid of the moderation system into the users, and since most users are completely clueless on how to tweak the whole thing, they end using the evil default settings, which were thought to maximize obnoxious features, such as the karma system.

There's no way to completely get rid of the moderation - it's really sticky. But you can minimize its effects on your health by following some guidelines. In your Comments configuration pane, use the following settings:

  • Display mode: Nested
  • Threshold: -1: Uncut and Raw
  • Highlight Threshold: -1: Uncut and Raw
  • Reason Modifier: set Funny to -6 and Troll to +6
  • Anonymous Modifier: +1
  • Karma bonus: 0
  • Index Spill: 500
  • Always show link domains: marked

If you want to really get mostly rid of the moderation system:

  • Do Not Display Scores: marked

You are likely to feel free after doing these modifications, and I'm pretty sure you will enjoy reading Slashdot comments by doing that. Besides, you won't feel the need to blame the moderation system (or, in particular, the usually stupid moderators) anymore. Good luck.
