Comment Just a thought... (Score 1) 197

So heres the issue: Computers are getting to the point where they can solve CAPTCHAs better than humans, so why don't we flip the tables? Why not build a CAPTCHA that takes human weaknesses into account? For example, use optical illusions and ask the human what it _appears_ to be doing, not what it actually is doing. A computer would perfectly interpret the illusion and output what it is doing, whereas the human would look at it, be fooled, and say what it appears to be doing.

Unless you have way too much time on your hands and probably an electron microscope as well, `dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda` works just fine. This is especially true for protecting against identity theft because no identity thief will want to spend that much time/money/effort recoving your data when they can just get another drive that wasn't wiped at all. (Unless you're really rich - then maybe they would.)

Comment AdBlock and AdWords (Score 1) 229

Whats an ad? ...No, really - I haven't seen any ads online in 5+ years thanks to AdBlock! Before adblock it was an /etc/hosts blacklist. I am to the point that if I visit any site I frequent on another computer without AdBlock I am surprised to find out that yes, ads still do exist.

On another note, if I am looking to buy something but I don't know where to get it, Google AdWords is one of the first places I look. I am always pleased at how out-of-the-way and un-obtrusive it is when I don't need it, (not to mention loads quickly since it's all text) but how useful it is when I do need it. Thanks Google for not making us "hit the target" or "spank the monkey" or whatever other crappy annoying flash ad is the latest fad.
