A study by the Library of Congress has found that many audio recordings are being lost due to copyright restrictions and temporary media. Old audio recordings are protected by a various U.S. state copyrights so it's hard for preservationists to get and copy material. Recent data is threatened by being put on writable CDs because CD-Rs begin to lose data after a few years, so recordings from as recently as 9/11 and the 2008 elections are already at risk.

Yet another optical flash on Jupiter has been spotted. The obvious explanation is that it's due to an impact event. If it is an impact, it's probably the third sighting in 14 months. Either large impacts are happening more often or they've been happening a lot more often than was previously believed. There are now many more automated telescopes with TV cameras watching the skies, so we're probably simply looking more often.

Through the AdWords blog, they've announced "retargeting". If you click on an ad, a cookie can be set which allows AdWords to show you more ads for that site. If you don't buy, you might see more ads elsewhere for that web site which you clicked on. It's not deja vu, it's what happens when something is changed.

You might want to check your SPAM folder, as SpamAssassin has a rule which is tending to make email sent in 2010 be marked as spam. There is some discussion in a Zimbra forum. The SpamAssassin Wiki FH_DATE_PAST_20XX page doesn't have discussion, but it was updated today with a different date rule.

The Internet also added paywall, unfriend/defriend, tag cloud, hashtag and tweetup to the language, while that real-world thing added epigenome, ecohacking, phantonym, redact, and zombie bank.

A small asteroid exploded over Indonesia on October 8, 2009, high enough that nobody was injured. The NASA/JPL NEO estimate is that the airburst explosion was similar to 50KT of TNT, and similar events are expected every 2-12 years. Local TV reported on the explosion and dust trail. The Telegraph points out that this rock was about one-sixth of the Tunguska object.

Seattle News is reporting that stories of Prius problems are accumulating. Causes of unintended acceleration and braking failures have not been identified, other than floor mats which may interfere with the accelerator pedal. Floor mat problems do not explain all the events, including one during a test drive.
