Submission + - OWC 1 Terabyte External Drive (Quad Interface)

isiah writes: "The drive can handle FireWire 800, FireWire 400, USB 2.0 and eSATA, and OWC is claiming speeds up to 80MB per second on FireWire and 150MB/s on eSATA, thanks to the Oxford 924 chipset. OWC was nice enough to include FireWire, USB and eSATA cables in the box, along with various backup softwares for Mac and Windows. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/externa l/elite-al-pro-quad"

Submission + - NASA and FAA Encourage Aviation Careers

gilgsn writes: "Planenews.com has a press release about NASA and the FAA signing a memorandum to foster the development of students' skills in science, technology, engineering and math. The agreement, although emphasizing the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research, seems more like an attempt at recruiting air traffic controllers. I wonder if it is related to the FAA's new tax program.."

Submission + - VA Tech Shooting Spurs Domain Exploiting

eldavojohn writes: "I just read an article about a guy who registered the following domain names shortly after the VA Tech incident: CampusKillings.com, VirginiaTechMurders.com, SlaughterInVirginia.com & VaTechTheMovie.com. Fred McChesney was hoping to make a quick buck by offering these domain names after the incident — although he hasn't sold any so far, he has donated a memorial domain to the students. He likened his entrepreneurial endeavor to "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic." It's interesting because some of these domains were revoked: "Jeremiah Johnston, chief operating officer for domain name broker Sedo.com, said his company has shut down domains named after the victims as well as dozens of others related to the tragedy, including BlacksburgBloodbath.com and SchoolSlaughter.com." While these domain names may be seen as socially sick or unkind to the families, is it really ok to revoke the right to select a domain based on this? Will this lead the way for politicians to force down domain names that are negative political commentary? Where does one draw the line? Will this happen for every widely publicized news event?"

Submission + - George Lucas Anounces Two New Star Wars Movies

alberion writes: In interview to the Fox News, George Lucas anounces two new Star Wars Movies. From the interview:
Lucas tells me he will make two more live-action films based in the "Star Wars" era. "But they won't have members of the Skywalker family as characters," he said. "They will be other people of that milieu." The two extra films will also be made for TV and probably be an hour long each. But, like "Clone Wars," Lucas doesn't know where on TV they will land.

Submission + - Jobs Responds to Greenpeace FUD

EccentricAnomaly writes: Steve Jobs has posted a response on the Apple homepage to the Greenpeace Green My Apple campaign in which he basically makes a case for the Greenepeace campaign being a heaping pile of FUD. On one hand, you could say that Greenpeace shouldn't expect a company that has spent years battling Microsoft to just roll over. On the other, it looks like Apple is agreeing to do most of what Greenpeace has been been demanding.

Submission + - Corals have as many genes as us

Roland Piquepaille writes: "You probably think that corals are very simple animals who also have a very simple genome. According to an international team of researchers from Australia, Germany and Japan, this is not true and corals might be more complex than us. They say that corals have as many as 20 or 25,000 genes, a number very similar to humans. And corals share a great number of genes with other vertebrates which govern their nervous and immune systems. The researchers also say that corals are using their innate immune systems to fight pandemics the same way as we do. Fascinating study, but read more for additional references and pictures of coral diseases."

Submission + - Student Arrested for Making Video Game Map of Scho

tanman writes: A Chinese student at the Houston-area Clements High School was arrested, sent to an "Alternative Education Center" and banned from graduation after school officials found he created a video game map of his school (Google mirror). School district police arrested the teen and searched his home where they confiscated a hammer as a "potential weapon". ' "They decided he was a terroristic threat," said one source close to the district's investigation. ' With an upcoming May 12 school board election, this issue has quickly become political, with school board members involved in the appeal accusing each other of pandering to the Chinese community in an attempt to gain votes.
