Submission + - Automatic Invalidation Update?

Anonymous Coward writes: "Microsoft has just launched an automatic update for IE6 to IE7, that will not go away. The update applies to Windows XP. The fun part is that to use the automatic update you need to justify your install of XP again. As my computer is an IBM NetVista that came with an OEM copy of XP and was originally leased to a business this could present problems unless I take the computer back to the seller as the computer is just set up to user. It seems that the release of IE7 has now become another Microsoft trick to catch pirated versions of XP. Having nothing but an OEM sticker license is becoming a real pain in the but. This is one user who after speaking to his wife tonight is going to Linux for good. It is extremely unfortunate that legitimate users and honest people are being put through this nonsense by a corporate bully. Is there no end to how despotic Microsoft will become if they are allowed to continue to abuse their monopoly?"

Journal Journal: NJ Schools testing for weekend drinking. 1

So I came across this article on FoxNews.com. Apparently, in a New Jersey school district, they are testing student's urine for weekend drinking. From the article: "Under the program, students who test positive will not be kicked off teams or barred from extracurricular activities, Reynolds said. Instead, they will receive counseling -- and their parents will be notified." This to me is clearly a privacy issue, since the test is

Submission + - All PSP firmwares now hackable!

An anonymous reader writes: "Just a little while back, Fanjita wrote a small article on the people with non-homebrew-able PSPs should do. Waiting for an exploit was the only sensible thing to do in my opinion. And boy! people didn't have to wait very long; the Noobz team has just come out with a new exploit which works on all firmwares upto v 3.03 , which is all the Sony has been able to come up with."

Sony beaten again. Is it time to stop adding security updates with every firmware?

Submission + - Microsoft admits IE7+ EV SSL Won't Stop Phishing

An anonymous reader writes: Stanford University and Microsoft Research just published a study that claims that the new Extended Validation SSL Certificates in IE7 are ineffective. The EV certificates don't improve users ability to detect attacks and the interface can be spoofed. Training users actually decreased their ability to detect attacks. The study [PDF] will be presented at Usable Security 2007 next month, which is a little late now that the new certificates are already being issued.

Submission + - Yahoo! Private Domain Registration is not Private

An anonymous reader writes: Yahoo! Domains charges $0.75/month to keep your domain registration contact information private. The service is broken, however, and as a result, all attempts to email and call you will bounce. (The ultimate in privacy!) When you want to transfer your domain to a competing registrar, you must turn off their privacy service and expose your personal information to the world. The full story is here: http://blog.myplaceinthecrowd.org/2007/01/25/yahoo -private-domain-registration-if-it%E2%80%99s-broke n-don%E2%80%99t-fix-it/

Submission + - AT&T giving away service to lure iPhone custom

Anonymous Coward (why register?) writes: "According to this article on The Street (investment website), AT&T may be giving away free service in the US to lure iPhone customers from Verizon. Details are skimpy but 18 months free would certainly take some sting out of the US$499 handset base price. Could this herald a new business model as well- instead of buy service and get a free (subsidized) phone, buy a phone and get free service? Of course, a "base plan" could easily be limited and lead to lots of "upsell" opportunities for added services; hopefully more information will be forthcoming. As an aside, having worked at an Apple Store, bundled "free" service would likely make selling the iPhone much easier- no long explanations of myriad plan details, much less time and money spent training Mac Specialists about the cellular business, probably fewer customer service problems."
