Submission + - Access to academic journals for the newly laid off

shadeshope writes: How to gain access to academic/professional literature when out of academia and work?
I have recently found myself in professional limbo. After eight years designing embedded systems for industrial and medical applications. I returned to academia to research/study towards a PhD. Unfortunately due to recent health problems I have had to withdraw. It seems it could be sometime before I can consider continuing my studies. As such I am no longer enrolled and have lost all online access to university resources. Recently my doctor has said that it is ok to do a bit of light technical reading. However I keep encountering electronic roadblocks. In the form off accessible abstracts but protected articles. I know that there are some open journals but most seem to require one off payments or membership of a subscribing institution. It makes it impossible for me to pursue any sort of coherent path through the material. Sometimes it is possible to find a copy of a paper published on scrib or else where, using google. Mostly the information I want remains locked up, an electronic payment away.Have any slashdotters had similar problems? Is there any way to gain access to this information without spending money? It seems that given the economic situation the Government here in the UK and elsewhere. Would be keen to insure that those out of work have easy access in order to better their chances of keeping current and getting re-employed.
If I was in fulltime employment I would be happy to pay a fee to my local university library for access to journals etc. Grateful for any suggestions. Is there a pirate bay equivalent for published academic research?

Regards
Rod

Hey, current record labels?

You know how you can get people to download from you legally? Make it cheaper. So cheap that it's not even worth the minimal hassle to find it free. Don't like that? Not going to buy you your next Porsche? Tough; that's your only option to reduce piracy.

You've made a lot of money out of other peoples hard work for too long. I for one am not sorry to see your slow, struggling death. Evolve or die, bitches.

I had the exact same experience. The first 'so the internet is down' question on the phone support flow chart was 'what version of windows do you use'. 'I don't' got me put on hold for about 20 minutes. I then got put through to someone who sounded like they were stood in a server room and who solved my problem in about 30 seconds.

I think that drug dealing is the same as any other business. The smart, business savvy, guys can make a lot of money. The stupid and/or unambitious scrape by on near minimum wage. This is certainly supported by the dealers I have encountered.

Staying off the crack probably helps too.

Lunch with your preferred Presidential candidates for a high price?

ONE SEAT LEFT

I have arranged a private one-hour luncheon with Ron Paul on 11/28 in St.
Pete when he will be in town for the CNN/YouTube Republican debate.

This luncheon is reserved for $1000+ donors to Ron Paul's presidential
campaign. 19 people so far have paid and confirmed and will have the honor
and pleasure of having lunch and communicating with Ron Paul directly.

Here you will see the names of the Committee members on the left hand

Currently, the law prohibits political campaign activity by charities and churches by defining a 501(c)(3) organization as one "which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office."

I downloaded myself a copy and started looking through them. I found an interesting one on pages 47-48.

Karin Pouw of OSA of CofS writes a message.
It's forwarded by Michael Genung. He's the guy who runs ACSR, Association for Citizens Sociel Reform. http://www.citizensforsocialreform.org/ ["CSR Background and Philosopy: CSR was founded in 2001 by a group of Scientologists and other like-minded individuals concerned with the escalating social ills in society. CSR's purpose is to work with in the field of public policy to bring about more effective and humane solutions to these social ills of illiteracy, criminality substance abuse and general decay of character."]

Then it's forwarded by Doyle Mills, of LEAF fame (Letters to the Editor Attack Force).
Then it's forwarded by Mary C. (possibly one of two Mary C's I'm thinking of, but unsure).
Then it's forwarded by Mike Kaplan, another person who runs an email list and forwards CCHR type stuff to CofS members.

If that ain't stringing a line from the CofS to CCHR and the CofS front group ("grassroots") movements, then I don't know what is!

Just a casual user passing on a message from the Enturbulation forum, this is already out there, there's no reason to attack the messenger."

Submission + - Sealand bought by a Kazakh writer?

rm writes: "According to Russian-language news site CentrAsia (translation), a Kazakh writer Daniyar Ashimbaev, with support from unnamed Kazakh company, on 10-th January, had purchased Principality of Sealand. He plans to move to live there, despite that only 3 of 16 living rooms of Sealand's only platform are left intact after recent fire. Daniyar says his sponsors helped him to buy Sealand as an advertisement venture, and soon their trademark signs will be placed on billboards on top of Sealand's platform. The writer also said that he hopes to make Sealand a forepost of Kazakh culture on the west, and make Kazakh and Russian the official state languages of Sealand."
