Submission + - PS3 beats Wii in Japan for second month running (gamesoption.com)

GamesOption writes: "Sony's console once again tops Nintendo's once-unstoppable platform in the two companies' home country, reports Enterbrain. Since last year, the Wii and DS have been the two top-selling platforms in the US, according to sales figures from the NPD Group. However, Nintendo's reign appears to be coming to an end in Japan, where both its console and handhelds are locked in a fierce battle with rival devices from Sony. On the portable front, the PSP beat the DSi on the Media Create sales charts last week, 41,200 units to 37,500 units. However, the DS Lite sold 6,400 units, bringing the total DS sales to 43,900 units. ess closely contested is the console matchup, which saw the Wii lose to the PlayStation 3 for the second month in a row in April. According to sales figures provided to Reuters by Enterbrain, the industry-tracking company that publishes Famitsu magazine, the PS3 sold 108,530 units in Japan in the four weeks before April 26-down from 146,948 the month before. By contrast, the Wii sold just 67,116 units of the Wii, down from its 99,335 March total-a 63 percent fall from March 2008. More..."

Submission + - Expect Wii HD 'upgrade' in '10 (gamesoption.com)

GamesOption writes: "Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter tells investors to expect a high-definition version of Nintendo's console next year, but believes publisher investment will put off next hardware generation. Although Sony's PlayStation 2 is holding up remarkably well nine years on, game-console life cycles traditionally last around four to five years. However, if one of the leading US game-industry analysts is to be believed, the current crop of consoles won't be succeeded as soon as their forbearers. Although the Xbox 360 was released in 2005 and the Wii and PlayStation 3 arrived in 2006, Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter said that we shouldn't expect truly new consoles in 2010 or 2011. "We do not expect the 'next' generation to begin before 2013, if at all," he said. The latter part of his comment may be in reference to new technologies that may disrupt the console model, such as the OnLive cloud-computing game network revealed at this year's Game Developers Conference. "We remain convinced that the publishers will resist the introduction of any video game hardware technology that requires a refresh of software, as the publishers have as yet to capitalize on the immense investments made in being competitive in the current cycle," Pachter continued. "We therefore think it is likely that the 'next' generation will begin after 2013, meaning that software sales are likely to grow by a compounded annual rate of 6-10 percent for another five years. Because R&D costs are likely to flatten out with the benefits of a learning curve, we expect earnings leverage as the publishers are able to exploit R&D investments. In brief, we think that investors have it wrong so far this cycle, and think that investment in video game publishers will bear fruit for many years." One thing Pachter does expect next year, though, is "the long-rumored high-definition Wii, which is likely to upgrade the Wii to current console technology." Last year, similar rumors circulated about a HD Wii, but those pegged the device as arriving in 2011."

Furthermore, the single US death (that 23-month old Mexican child) was reported by health officials to already have been afflicted by a number of underlying conditions prior to his swine flu exposure.

But hey, that information doesn't sound nearly frightening enough, so let's just shove it off to the footnotes, yes?

Submission + - HEN TIFF exploit cracks PSP-3000 open for homebrew

indrora writes: "The PSP community was rocked hard this weekend by the HEN Homebrew Enabler from developers Davee and Bubbletune. One of their friends on the Team Typhoon development team posted a YouTube video showing proof of the TIFF Exploit running on Firmware 5.03, changing firmware version and MAC address for a reboot. This comes after a picture of gpSP running on a PSP-3000 via the HEN Exploit.
From the QJ.net article:

First things first: No, Davee hasn't finished the HEN yet. Which means it isn't out yet. What we do have today is some visual confirmation that the HEN can indeed run emulators, in this case the GBA emulator gpSP.

And the more recent article showing the exploit demo video:

Be patient, everyone. Davee's HEN Kernel exploit will eventually arrive given time. To tide over that wait, here's a little video demonstrating the 5.03 HEN in action. This one was posted by Granite, one of the beta testers of Davee (Team Typhoon).

"This is a demo of the 5.03 firmware running the tiff exploit and booting into a HEN environment on a PSP 2003 (3000 Support also) on 5.03 Official Firmware. This proves that the code survives a reboot and the system software and MAC address can be changed. This is something that only can be done with a kernel exploit. A video launching homebrew will be posted later."

Hopefully, We'll have PSP-3000's playing Homebrew games and running PSP uCLinux."

Submission + - Microsoft earning only $15 per XP netbook (wsj.com)

christian.einfeldt writes: "The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft is earning only about $15.00 USD for each netbook sold with Microsoft Windows XP. The WSJ cites the proliferation of netbooks as a factor contributing to the 8% decline in Windows revenue for the quarter that ended in December, 2008. The netbook market segment poses an on-going problem for Microsoft, according to the WSJ, in light of the fact that Gartner, a market research firm, recently predicted unit sales of netbooks will grow nearly 80% this year to 21 million units, while overall PC sales decline a record 11.9%. Microsoft will respond by offering Microsoft Windows 7 Starter Edition, which features limited functionality such as limited customization and a cap of three applications running concurrently. Dell, meanwhile, has said recently that its sales of Linux-based netbooks constitute about one-third of its Inspiron Mini 9s, with return rates comparable to that of Inspiron Mini 9s netbooks running XP."

Pure skepticism at best, fear-mongering sensationalism at worst. Medical experts studying the phenomenon are in dispute as to whether the alleged "cytokine storm" phenomenon is actually, well, occurring at all.

The deaths and even advanced cases of this H1N1 strain comprise nowhere near the numbers required for a legitimate test sample. This "cytokine storm" nonsense is the media byproduct of Wikipedia physicians spewing out the most attention-grabbing tripe possible. The majority of legitimate medical resources are simply stating, paraphrased, "well, it has the potential to mutate in such a manner as to produce this phenomenon - so, needless to say, we ought to treat our ill and prepare for future outbreaks of greater severity". Naturally, this is being delivered nationally as "CYTOKINE STORM! CYTOKINE STORM! CYTOKINE STORM! YOU WILL ALL DIE HORRIBLY. BROUGHT TO YOU BY HARLEY-DAVISON - DIE IN STYLE, DIE ON A HOG."
