God doesn't have to be a Santa Claus on steroids

Santa Claus never brought anyone wars, pestilence or childhood leukemia. Nor did he ever send anyone to suffer torment in Hell for eternity for disobeying their parents or coveting their neighbor's wife.

um if your naughty he gives you coal instead of what you wanted. also people get trampled during christmas sales, so while it is not all out war, there are a lot of battle's being waged and all the bounty is signed with Santa's name.

I don't think it is elegant at all. What is elegant are all the amazing bio-machines that have been built here on earth. When you can make something as efficient and reliable as a human heart, or a computer as complex as the human brain you can be as arrogant as you want. Until then I'm gonna have to believe we were designed like we were on purpose.

That said, I don't know why this is on /.. This has nothing to do with technology, geeks, etc... And everyone interested in this can read about this from every other news source in the world. I live in Finland and our massmedia caught this before Slashdot. In addition to that, this isn't even final yet (still needs to be signed by a lot of folks, if I understood correctly, so this still might not pass) so we will certainly be able to read about this numerous times more, even in /..

You could probably say it is on slashdot because a lot of technology is used in modern medicine, and modern medicine is a science. One thing the people not for this bill have been saying is that that our free market system encourages the best and the brightest to innovate because of the monetary gain, and if it is government controlled those people will look for jobs elsewhere. I'm sure there are plenty of people in medical tech, and medicine that read slashdot that are concerned how this will affect their jobs.

OnLive and Gaikai — How To Stop a Gaming Revolution 125

happierr writes "The gaming industry has been struggling in the last few months, and it is about to struggle even more when OnLive and Gaikai launch later this year. The new services are both a step in the right direction to counter piracy and provide easily-accessible gaming to people with low-end PCs. They might even do for PC gaming what the Wii did for casual gaming; greatly expand the market and draw interest from people who would not ordinarily play games. The services are a real threat for the Big Three video game companies (Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo). How will they combat these revolutionary services? There are a few steps that the Big Three are taking to combat the New Two, such as an increased reliance on peripherals and vision cameras, exclusivity deals, and more online multiplayer features, which OnLive and Gaikai will have a hard time matching."

I don't know anyone of the 20 or 30 people that play or have played WoW for thousands of hours that haven't tried out other MMORPGs - Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, EVE, a slew of free or freemium ones, etc

funny you don't mention any mmo's that came out before wow, or a regular rpg for that matter. I am guessing the folks you know wow is their first mmo or even RPG experience and trying the games you mention is more like looking for a new wow fix instead of a love for the genre. Otherwise you would have said my friends all played eq2 and Ultima, love the forgotten realms stuff and are looking foward to the new diablo(maybe). Anyways you just reinforced the point of the article I think..."They're WoW players and that's it". If a game that comes after wow isn't wow it better be damn close otherwise it is not worth the time amirite?

US Declares Public Health Emergency Over Swine Flu 695

mallumax sends word from the NYTimes that US government officials today declared a public health emergency over increasing cases of the swine flu first seen in Mexico. Here is additional coverage from CNN. From the Times: "American health officials [say]... that they had confirmed 20 cases of the disease in the United States and expected to see more as investigators fan out to track down the path of the outbreak. Other governments around the world stepped up their response to the incipient outbreak, racing to contain the infection amid reports of potential new cases from New Zealand to Hong Kong to Spain, raising concerns about the potential for a global pandemic. The cases in US looked to be similar to the deadly strain of swine flu that has killed more than 80 people in Mexico and infected 1,300 more." Reader "The man who walks in the woods" sends a link to accounts emailed to the BBC from readers in Mexico. While these are anecdotal, they do paint a picture of a more serious situation than government announcements have indicated so far.
