Obviously I'm not aware of the "consultations". My opinion is, and continues to be that members of the state government hold personal convictions, and those convictions can influence their decisions. Having lived in Utah for several years, I think that the government is under great pressure to show that it is not directly influenced by the church. For every claim that it is influenced/controlled by the church, I have never seen anything definitive.

The source of this legislation is a man, Michael Waddoups, not the LDS church.

There's a big difference between a government's strings being pulled by a church and a government made up of a large number of people who share the same beliefs. One's a violation of principal, the other is legal, legitimate government established by the people. The Utah state government is FAR from being in the pocket of the church.

MS Confirms Six Different Versions of Windows 7 758

darien writes "Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 7 will be offered in six different editions. In a seeming admission that the numerous versions of Vista were confusing to consumers, the company says that this time its marketing will focus on just two editions — 'Home Premium' and 'Professional.' But the reality is more complex, with different packages offering different subsets of the total range of Windows 7 features."

NASA Offering Free Zero Gravity Flights 52

An anonymous reader writes to tell us that NASA is offering free zero-g flight time for anyone with a viable proposal for emerging space technologies. While NASA will provide the flight time, approved projects will be responsible for all other expenses. "NASA's Facilitated Access to the Space Environment for Technology Development and Training, or FAST, program helps emerging technologies mature through testing in a reduced gravity environment. To prepare technologies for space applications, it is important to demonstrate they work in a zero-gravity environment. This unique testing environment can be provided in an aircraft flying repeated parabolic trajectories which create brief periods of zero gravity. The aircraft also can simulate reduced-gravity levels similar to those found on the surface of the moon or Mars."

Blade Runner was a great movie. It's reputation and storyline ought to be left alone. If you want to write a story, it shouldn't be dependent on the world that it's set in. Fundamentally, if the story is sound it will function in whatever world you set it in. You don't need to put it in the world of Blade Runner.

The functionality of the API I think will determine it's usefulness. If all the thing does is give you a 400x400 ad for a BestBuy product, this thing will be worthless and BB will quickly learn that. If however, they offer a really flexible system which can deliver what a blogger wants, in the way that he wants, then this thing could offer a great integration point for BestBuy. Non-invasiveness is the key... as always.

RIAA Gives Up In Atlantic Recording v. Brennan 230

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes "In Atlantic Recording v. Brennan, the landmark Connecticut case in which the first decision rejecting the RIAA's 'making available' theory was handed down, the RIAA has finally thrown in the towel and dismissed its own case. Mr. Brennan never appeared in the case at all. In February, 2008, the RIAA's motion for a default judgment was rejected for a number of reasons, including the Court's ruling (PDF) that there is no claim for 'making available for distribution' under the US Copyright Act. The RIAA moved for reconsideration; that motion was denied. Then, in December, the RIAA's second motion for default judgment was rejected. Finally the RIAA filed a 'notice of dismissal' ending the case."

Comment I don't think Steve's exit will be a big deal (Score 1) 405

I really don't think Steve leaving Apple will be that big of a deal. Yes, it will cause the stock to drop significantly. Yes, it will leave a spot open for someone to take over the keynote speech, but I don't think these are company-killing problems. Jobs does his announcements the way he does because it's something that he's really good at. He knows how to tell a story, lead an audience, and deliver the right pieces at the right time. I think the key will be (when it's needed) to not try to replace Jobs. You can't. The person might have the same job, but he/she doesn't have to do it the same way. People keep on predicting the loss of Steve means the death of Apple. Steve has done a lot for Apple, but my prediction is that Apple will only fall apart if they try to replicate what they have with Jobs.

Apple Intros 17" Unibody MBP, DRM-Free iTunes 1079

Phil Schiller delivered the keynote at MacWorld, the first after the Steve Jobs era of keynotes. Here is Engadget's live blog. The big news, predicted by many rumor sites, was the introduction of the unibody 17" MacBook Pro. As rumored, the battery is not removable, but it's claimed to provide 8 hours of battery life (7 hours with the discrete graphics): "3x the charges and lifespan of the industry standard." $2,799, 2.66 GHz and 4 GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive, shipping at the end of January. There is a battery exchange program, and there is an option for a matte display. The other big news is that iTunes is going DRM-free: 8M songs today, all 10+M by the end of March. Song pricing will be flexible, as the studios have been demanding; the lowest song price is $0.69. Apple also introduced the beta of a Google Docs-like service, iWork.com.

NZ File-Sharers, Remixers Guilty Upon Accusation 449

An anonymous reader writes "Next month, New Zealand is scheduled to implement Section 92 of the Copyright Amendment Act. The controversial act provides 'Guilt Upon Accusation,' which means that if a file-sharer is simply accused of copyright infringement he/she will be punished with summary Internet disconnection. Unlike most laws, this one has no appeal process and no punishment for false accusation, because they were removed after public consultation. The ISPs are up in arms and now artists are taking a stand for fair copyright."
