BobB writes: MIT and Cambridge (UK) researchers say a more efficient way to build municipal wireless networks (which have by falling by the wayside for financial and political reasons) is to exploit the dense network of wireless access points already deployed by individuals in urban areas. Submission + - NFL, MLB Sued for Misleading "Copyright Warnin

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes: "The "copyright warnings" which appear on DVD's, videos, television programs, and other copyrighted materials, long known by legal scholars to be deceptive, are now the subject of a lawsuit filed by the Computer & Communications Industry Association with the Federal Trade Commission entitled In the Matter of Misrepresentation of Consumer Fair Use and Related Rights. The complaint (pdf) filed with the FTC names the NFL, Major League Baseball, NBC Universal, Inc., Universal Studios, Inc., Dreamworks, and others for routinely ignoring the Fair Use statute which is part of the Copyright Act in their "copyright warnings", thereby deceiving consumers and trying to enlarge the scope of their copyrights beyond what the law permits. The complaint gives very specific examples, and attaches some as exhibits."

Submission + - AT&T cancels "At the tone, the time is...& (sacbee.com)

Scoopy writes: "After Sept. 19, Californians can no longer dial POPCORN to get the automated tone message telling you the time. AT&T says the service is outdated, thanks to the proliferation of time-telling devices like computers and cell phones. 'It's not like it was in 1929,' says a company spokesperson. By discontinuing the time calls in California, the phone company will gain 300,000 new telephone numbers previously reserved for the service. When the service started 80 years ago, AT&T operators actually read the time off from wall clocks to callers. Nevada will be the last state to have the antiquated service. (non-reg version)"
