It seems to me that every time the minimum wage is raised everyone who isn't at minimum wage effectively takes a pay cut because grocery store owners, fast food chains, gas stations and every other minimum wage employer has to raise prices to match rising labor costs.

I'm not an economics expert (obviously) so could someone explain why raising minimum wage (or having it in the first place) is a good thing?

Alice Hill's plan to ruin Slashdot in a nutshell:
Step 1: Drive away nerd community.
Step 2: Make site more palatable to norms.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit!

Alice Hill is an insensitive clod.
She didn't take into account that most nerds have some degree of autism and therefore don't like it when things change. Since the slogan for the site is "News for Nerds" we can only interpret this as a hostile act and must retaliate appropriately. We are not wanted here so let's move on.

I don't get the point of this at all.

"My doctor, family, friends, conscience, and co-workers tell me to lose weight and I haven't listened to them but maybe if I have the government nag me about it I'll turn my life around".
Who thinks like this? (Other than people without doctors, family, friends, conscience, and co-workers)

I do the same thing.
I think it's a matter of putting your situation into perspective like "yeah things suck but they could be worse" or "hey there's someone out there that feels like I do".

I've been toying around with making an alarm clock that uses the same idea.
It cusses you out Full Metal Jacket R Lee Ermey style (hitting the snooze button only intensifies the cursing) instead of the usual chimes.
This way there is a good possibility your day will only get better!
