Comment Re:Unit conversions (Score 0) 185

What has become of this world, when a consortium of Slashdotters can't convert 1 sq m to sq ft? No wonder I didn't drive to work today in the flying car I was promised 50 years ago.

Good god, man! What has happened?
Is this the New America? Is this /. these days?
I slogged through all this kiddie stuff and mastered it more than 50 years ago!
Now I read a bunch of crap 1M^2 = 10.x FT^2 blah blah..etc etc...
WHY AM EVEN READING THIS MIDDLE SCHOOL CRAP???
Geez! Is this the state of math in the good ol' USA these days?
I am beginning to suspect that except for NASA, Caltech and Ivy-league colleges, and I'm not sure about this last group) most of of the USA is mathematically illiterate!
Forty years ago, NASA was full of Canadian engineers.
Now it's full of European and Asian engineers.
America, once you can't pay their salaries any more, they will leave. And then guess what?

If we can indeed establish some uhh, decorum in this silly /. article -

In WW-II, the Soviet Army apparently trained dogs as guerrilla fighters.
They would train the starving dogs by feeding the dogs their food under tanks or trucks.
When the dogs were sufficiently Pavlovinized, they would be transported to the front, and have bombs strapped to them with a trigger "antenna" above them.
The Russians would then release the 4-legged IEDs (presumably there were no Russian tanks or trucks nearby) at the invading Nazi tanks and/or trucks.
The doggie IEDs apparently did a fairly good job, knocking out a few hundred Nazi tanks. ("citation, please?" - Sorry!)

I wonder if there is a statue anywhere in Russia commemorating these heroic K9 fighters who valiantly gave their lives for the motherland.
Probably not, the insensitive commies!

Thank goodness, these current benighted mohammedin savages consider dogs to be unclean.
(No jokes about Afghan hounds or monkeyfucking, please).

New Batfish Species Found Under Gulf Oil Spill 226

eDarwin writes "Researchers have discovered two previously unknown species of bottom-dwelling fish in the Gulf of Mexico, living right in the area affected by the BP oil spill. Researchers identified new species of pancake batfishes, a flat fish rarely seen because of the dark depths they favor. They are named for the clumsy way they 'walk' along the sea bottom, like a bat crawling."

Stand-Alone Antivirus Software? 159

An anonymous reader writes "I work for a company that repairs specialty devices that have an embedded Mini-ATX motherboard without a CD-ROM drive and run Windows XP Home. And while the USB flash drives we insert into them have a physical write-protect tab, we still encounter a (rather annoying) display dialog from malware/viruses to remove the write-protect so the malware can infect the flash drive. We don't remove the write-protect, obviously, but would like to offer our customers the option of removing the malware/virus without having to install any software. We would rather not install/uninstall antivirus software even for one-time use, due to various licensing issues, nor do we want to connect to the Internet to use web-based online scanners. Is there any stand-alone anti-virus/anti-malware software for Windows that can be run directly from the write-protected flash drive itself?"
