the problem is that most people do not know how to type emojis into an IRC client from a desktop keyboard. using a mobile client would be much easier to use of course since emoji keyboards are available right there. but yea the IRC does not support emoji or whatever FUD has been prevalent for a long time.

Firing 900 people over Zoom is hysteria. It is not that big a deal. Have old folks at Slashdot forgotten the HP and IBM and other behemoths firing 1000s of people over emails and post-it notes ? the phrase "pink slip" exists because people received a slip telling them they were fired. This is such a non-story, it is unbelievable that people react to this in this manner. Kids today don't read but watch video all day on their Tiktok and Instagram accounts, so it isn't a real surprise they get fired on a video platform.

It is for advertising. So they can get people to verify their identities thus leading to being able to connect them with other data sources, and showing them more targeted ads - same as what Twitter or Facebook do.
