Comment Re:No grub 2 (Score 2) 117

More like lilo needed to be reinstalled after every kernel change.
If you forgot or something went wrong you where SOL.
GRUB only needs to update its files in the filesystem.
Also, GRUB has a command line from where you can choose kernel to boot if things got messed up.
GRUB can also boot more things than LILO can.

Submission + - Scientific publication for software development (gael-varoquaux.info)

An anonymous reader writes: The academic community seems to judge the validity and significance of any contribution by the number of papers published and the number of citations they get. To find funding, to get credit, you have to publish or perish. A major challenge to publishing is that most of the highly-ranked journals tend to disregard software works, unless they are very specific to a scientific problem, which actually makes them less useful to the complete ecosystem. Deeply rooted in the minds of the editors and the reviewers, there tends to be the idea that developing software is easy compared to doing experiments or proofs. In addition, these top-notch scientists are not always the most qualified to judge the quality of software, as they have most often never worked in a major software project. The good news is that this is slowing changing with the creation of software tracks in specialized journals, and the development of new journals focused on scientific software.

Submission + - Use Linux instead of Windows? China won't (strategypage.com) 1

rssrss writes: Even Communist dictators have a hard time getting organizations under their control to use Linux instead of Windows. 'For a decade now, China has been trying to get business and government users to adopt Unix (and later Linux) as their operating system. Yet most Chinese businesses, and many government departments, continue to use Microsoft operating systems.' Will Russia have any more success?

Submission + - Swedish supreme court protect file sharers (google.se)

flote writes: The Swedish Supreme Court (Högsta Domstolen) has decided that several laws concerning file sharing and the identity of the file sharer overlap and are contradictory. "The issue of [whether] Ephone get[s to] share the information is so complicated that it is necessary to ask the EU Court in Luxembourg for advice. And European Court usually takes plenty of time. It's probably about one to two, at worst, up to five years of treatment. .. This means that file-sharers will be protected if the record label or film company requires the identification information, until the European Court of Justice puts the foot down."
