Submission + - The Power Architecture Time Base register in 64-bi

An anonymous reader writes: See how the PowerPC core (including Cell/B.E. variants) offers a convenient hardware feature for measuring elapsed time with fine precision, quickly and scalably. Learn about applications that might benefit from this sort of code include high-load transaction servers that need to timestamp individual events, and cryptographic applications where the time of day is included in message data to provide time sensitivity of data.

Submission + - SQL-Ledger relicenced to non-free licence

An anonymous reader writes: After over seven years under the GPL, SQL-Ledger has switched to a home-grown, non-free licence: the SQL-Ledger Open Source License. This new licence came into effect when version 2.8.0 was released, and contains terms that appear to have been written to remove the ability for a fork to happen to the new series.

Could it be that the recent fork of LedgerSMB was too popular for the author of SQL-Ledger?

RIAA & MPAA Seek Authority To Pretext 263

msblack writes "The RIAA and MPAA are lobbying California legislators for an exemption to proposed legislation that would outlaw pretexting. Pretexting is the practice of pretending to be someone else in order to obtain personal information on a person, such as telephone or banking records. According to an article in the LA Times, the RIAA and MPAA sometimes need to lie in their pursuit of bootleggers. They would like the legislation to exempt anyone who owns a copyright, patent, trademark, or trade secret from restrictions against pretexting. An interesting line from the article is, '[RIAA's Brad] Buckles said the recording industry had never, nor would it ever, assume someone's identity to access that person's phone or bank records.' Fortunately, Senator Corbert, the bill's author, is unlikely to accept these hostile changes."

Submission + - RIAA & MPAA Petition California for License to

Myria writes: "Saturday's Los Angeles Times is running an article about how the RIAA and MPAA are lobbying the California Senate for an exemption from a proposed law making "pretexting" illegal in the wake of the Hewlett-Packard scandal. The attempt appears unlikely to succeed. From the article:

The trade group asked that any owner of a copyright, patent, trademark or trade secret be able to use "pretexting or other investigative techniques to obtain personal information about a customer or employee" when seeking to enforce intellectual property rights. ... The industry's proposed amendment is unlikely to get anywhere when it comes up for an initial hearing in the California Senate's Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Cable Packet Shaping Causing Slowdowns 356

knorthern knight writes "To counter P2P programs that encrypt their traffic to evade detection, Rogers Cable in Canada has apparently started degrading all encrypted IP traffic, according to a post on Michael Geist's blog. How many of you log in to work over a VPN or ssh-tunnel? How many get usenet news or email over an encrypted connection? This could be a problem for Rogers Cable customers. Geist, who teaches at U of Ottawa, has 'been advised that the University computer help desk has received a steady stream of complaints from Rogers customers about off-campus email service.'"

Feed Global Positioning System Significantly Impacted By Powerful Solar Radio Burst (sciencedaily.com)

During an unprecedented solar eruption last December, researchers at Cornell University confirmed solar radio bursts can have a serious impact on the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other communication technologies using radio waves. The findings were announced in Washington, D.C., at the first Space Weather Enterprise Forum—an assembly of academic, government and private sector scientists focused on examining the Earth's ever-increasing vulnerability to space weather impacts.
