Comment No, until AI is self-aware. (Score 1) 186

Last I recall AI's were not self aware, until they are, they cannot own Patents. It would be as silly as saying a hammer built a house. No it's someone built a house with a hammer. Behind all purpose built AI's is a human or operator who setup the conditions (the question) and review (the results). A good example is the challenge for a self-driving car. There's no AI out there where we go "go ahead invent this." In reality the design of the sensors, system and creation of training data plus testing is all a human endeavour.

Comment Superman is a god? (Score 1) 93

Not that historical movies aren't important but I sort of wonder if years from now it isn't misinterpreted as people of our era had some weird beliefs in some really weird gods. I'd much prefer them store things like fossil records or at least things that make us look smarter.

Comment Amazon's Stores arn't profitable (Score 1) 91

As hard as it might be to believe, Amazon doesn't actually profit off it's market services. Amazon Web Services is apparently where all their profit is and they run Amazon marketplace at a loss. The reality is that when it comes to selling things online, there's not that much profit to be had so it shouldn't be surprising that Amazon's continually trying different ways to try to net a profit but in the meantime just end up stomping their competitors out of business. It's a business model similar to Microsoft's Xbox who for years lost millions of dollars but only survived because of massive profit from Microsoft's other divisions (Windows & Office).

It's impressive to do almost 3 Ghz in a cellphone processor... Granted that's probably a version of "turbo" which means it can't maintain that for very long. Of course this means cellphones will likely overheat even faster since there isn't much area or space to provide proper heat-sinking.

I can believe a bit of coffee is good for you, it improves your mood and makes you a bit more productive without too many bad side-effects so common sense would suggest that yes a little probably is beneficial. I think 25 cups of coffee might be too much. Think about it, would you normally drink 25 cups of soda, milk or even water?

Comment DJI restrictions (Score 3, Informative) 146

It's kind of ironic how this argument has gone both ways. I originally really wanted a DJI Drone too but after the paranoia around users abusing drones, DJI put altitude and speed limits and even geo-fencing no-fly zones in response. Plus some firmware updates are mandatory and there's major suspicions that DJI keeps in contact with their Drones. Now apparently we're a bit worried that DJI might have a little too much data on their drones. Go figure... Personally I don't think drones should have artificial limitations in them. If you break the laws, you're responsible for it.

Great, so that means we're going to end up changing the climate into something that our species has never experienced. Hopefully we're going to be comfortable with that because it's the equivalent of experimenting with the climate controls on your spacesuit while you're out in space with it

Comment Largely depends on what you're doing (Score 2) 354

If you need someone to write "Hello World!" then sure, almost anyone could do it. Most business coding requirement are pretty simple too but do anything a bit more complicated such as multi-user or multi-threaded OS, efficient data structures or simply handling insanely huge amounts of data then you'll want someone with a background that is at least familiar with the theory and algorithms required behind it. You don't need an engineer to build a dog house but you might want to consider one if you're building a skyscraper.
