Come to think of it, the TV in the basement is for disks. We already belly up to a 31" monitor and component stereo for broadcast through the (old) HDHomeRun on the LAN. Guess monitors are the future.

To elaborate on "sports", it annoys the hell out of me when I'm watching the local news and everything behind the anchor desk is out of focus. That's not the HD I bought into. This has to be a major debate about the "art" of film-making because I'm sure my complaint is seen as dirty, unwashed ignorance by anyone with a first-year photography or film school class. But really, isn't HD sold as a "window" into the scene? What sort of "window" is it if 3/4s of the scene is out of focus? So I really wonder if kids in 50 years will look at old movies and say, "Daddy, why is most of the picture out of focus?". Will traditional film school techniques be seen as "expressionist" in the future?

I think that argument in the recent couple decades of SciFi makes a lot of sense. What payoff would a species intelligent enough to build a significant ship expect for that much expenditure? But if you are talking small probes with AI I'm agnostic.

12-1/2 months ago we left 25 years in a metro rental complex in the Mpls/St. Paul beltway when the gentrifying new owners raised the rent on the townhouse three times in a year. Exiled to a mortgage in the far xurbs 25 minutes from the beltway. At least an M-F city bus terminal ends a mile+ away. I would say our market is just heating up on moving the non-well off out. "Maturing" into a typical world metro market perhaps.

From about the time Warp came out through the first year of Windows 95 a person could argue they had the most kick ass desktop with OS/2 and Object Desktop. I have run over 1200 pounds of paper from townhouse through Canon to recycling. A few thousand books, mags and newsletters. Basically, I agree with the premise that it can be done with a $400 autofeeder and a spine cutter and I also agree with the objections. Is this a webcam on a tripod and something like gscan2pdf? Maybe. How well the software handles things like page curl is important to how worthwhile it is. But he is only asking a fraction of what an autoscanner setup would cost so it is not that expensive and it might even be a good supplement for the books you do not want to destroy. Tempting. It is not like autofeeders do not require some attention at hand too and you have to think about the cost of those replacement rollers.
