Submission + - PCI-Express External cabling standard announced

symbolset writes: "The PCI-SIG has announced the release of the PCI Express External Cabling Specification V1.0. This standard allows for transfer of data through an external cable at 2.5GT/s (For the x16 cable, 8GB/s) to a cable length of up to 10 meters. An update is expected to double this speed to 5.0GT/s.

A limited review is available on The Inquirer, with pictures. The products are apparently already in production.

Is this new standard likely to change the game for graphics adapters and RAID controllers? What other devices might benefit from a high speed external serial point-to-point connection?"

Submission + - Music Labels Grumble About Job's Anti DRM Missive

Thomas Hawk writes: "The RIAA and the music industry have taken the bait. After Job's earlier anti-DRM missive this week, the recording industry has responded as one would suspect, with criticism. Unfortunately for them, this is all part of Job's marketing genius plan that would seek to align would be Apple consumers with a popular anti-DRM message. Will the recording industry be forced to drop DRM in the end? http://thomashawk.com/2007/02/yes-they-took-bait-m usic-industry.html"

Submission + - What's in a job title?

An anonymous reader writes: Currently I call my self a Systems Administrator. I've been told that may not be such a good job title when trying to move up/get ahead. Here is what I do:
  • Write all the company's web applications (WebObjects/Java)
  • Maintain the company's web site/ftp site/mail server. I also write all the HTML pages (aka webmaster which isn't 'in' anymore, apparently)
  • LAN/WAN & VPN connectivity.
  • Maintain file servers
  • Maintain LDAP server
  • Maintain DNS
  • Desktop support
  • Server maintenance training
  • DBA (MySQL, some Oracle)
  • I maintain 8 servers in three countries.

Don't know if it matters but I also report to the VP of Engineering/IT who reports to the CEO. What do you think, what title would you choose? Title's like head yahoo doesn't really work :-)

I could just be full of it...

(No offense to any Systems Administrators out there...)

Submission + - Could Apple be making $5M on undelivered iTunes?

texacali3d writes: "Simple Technology asks, "Is Apple Making Bank on Undelivered iTunes Songs?"

Why doesn't Apple let people know if their gift of an iTunes song doesn't arrive at it's intended destination? If I place a cell phone call and it doesn't connect, I don't get charged. If I mail a letter, the post office will return undelivered mail to sender.

And is this 5 mil dollar amount correct in this quote from story?

"This little experiment begs the question, how much money is Apple making on undelivered music? Let's say that only two percent of the one billion songs downloaded last year were 'gifted' songs,' that would add up to 20 million songs. Now, that's hardly a drop in Apple's bucket of revenue, but if a twenty-five percent failure rate is the norm, then 5 million songs go undelivered while Apple makes around $4.95 million per year for failing to deliver songs."

Submission + - GPS shoes make people findable

Radon360 writes: Engineer Isaac Daniel has developed shoes that have a tiny Global Positioning System chip embedded in them. He started working on a prototype of Quantum Satellite Technology, a line of $325 to $350 adult sneakers that hit shelves next month. It promises to locate the wearer anywhere in the world with the press of a button. A children's line will be out this summer.
