What else is there? It's not like you can back up to a SAN, and then stick the SAN in a courier bag and send it to remote storage. Optical? Too small. The magical "cloud" doesn't stack up well for security compared to a physical safe. Flash is promising, but still not there in terms of reliablity.

When they come up with a compact, reliable, portable storage medium I'll be the first one to toss tapes out the window. The idea of running backups to some credit-card sized SD cards is appealing.

Then they started rolling every goddamn thing into the "digital only" package. "Doesn't cost any more" except that you have to rent a specialized fucking receiver for each goddamn room you want it in, or if you want to actually use the CableCard function built into your TV, they actually charge you MORE to rent the fucking cablecard.

This statement is incorrect. Comcast gave those receivers out for free for every room of your house. I have 3 of them.

the saying in my IT world is.... "If it's not broken, break something that is easy to fix so at least you can look busy". The biggest problem with management vs IT is that when your IT guy is doing his job, less stuff tends to break. This leads to management thinking that the IT guy isn't doing anything and can be eliminated. My philosophy is to "break" something on a regular basis so that you can at least look busy when people walk around your desk or cube. Staring at log files typically just looks like you are browsing the web to people who don't know any better.

Nothing that Monsanto does comes as a surprise to anyone who has seen "Food, Inc.". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1286537/

the problem with GMO crops is that they can't be contained. a farmer doesn't have to plant monsanto's corn or soy beans for them to start growing in their fields.

and to anyone who says "i will just avoid eating corn and corn products".... good luck. almost every product in the grocery store either contains corn or ate corn.

furthermore, i stopped somewhere around 60-70 people in the 5 months that i did loss prevention. all of them were charged with a misdemeanor and were put on probation for 11 months 29 days. these cases are shuffled through the court system so fast that the judges usually don't even pay attention to the actual case. the average amount of time that a shoplifter sat before a judge was about 5 minutes.
