I'm not sure if this technology is in any resemblance to the old atom spinning technology that I read about years ago, and I've not researched into this much yet, BUT from what I remember of spin technology there is no need for "boot time" or "shutting down" a system. With the atoms spun in a certain position (say, to that of your normal desktop) the computer can be turned off, probably by the same usual methods, but it would shut off much like if you were to kill the power instantly. The atoms being saved in a certain position, would remain in that position while the computer isn't running. So when you next attempt to turn the computer on, it reads the position of the atoms and brings up the screen immediately, as if you had just turned off your monitor and turned it back on. However, that is from something I read a long time ago. And I’m not completely sure that it will work like that.

I only see it with terms of cost, being that though it takes more time and knowledge/work to set up a Linux server, you don't have to pay for licensing. But I also believe that if I can make something free work for everything I need without having to spend $$$$$$$, then I'm all for it!

Submission + - 4chan finds Linux kernel flaw for attacks (zdnet.com.au) 3

mask.of.sanity writes: Online activists have said that they have unearthed a zero-day Linux Kernel vulnerability which they intend on using in pending attacks against anti-pirate organisations. One activist said that the exploit had been discovered by Goatse Security member Weev and provides hackers with root administration access to Linux servers.

The new kernel vulnerability has already been used to hack and deface the website of the ACAPOR, a Portuguese anti-piracy agency that had become a target of the group's Operation Payback campaign in which the group had launched coordinated Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against several copyright enforcement agencies.

KISS frontman Gene Simmons is the latest victim to have his website attacked by a DDoS attack under the Operation Payback campaign, following his statements at a media event that users who infringe copyright should be sued.

Submission + - Linux to take over Microsoft in Enterprises (linux.com) 1

shougyin writes: For years, Linux has enjoyed much of its success as a replacement for Unix. Companies turned to Linux to replace Unix servers, or for new deployments within a Unix-heavy environment. Linux is still king there, but it's starting to encroach on Microsoft as well. Big companies are planning overwhelmingly (76.4%) to add more Linux servers in the next year, and less than half (41.2%) of the companies are planning to add Windows servers in the next year. Even more interesting, nearly half (43.6%) are actively planning to decrease use of Windows servers in the next year.

That's a horrible analogy IMHO. I don't see any need for humans to live longer than we do. We can pass on our knowledge to anyone that wishes to have it, and now have entire decades worth of knowledge, all at our finger tips. The only thing that matters is a persons thirst for such exploration. I'd much rather delve in something that stops the aging process (yes, i know, very far fetched) not to keep us alive for longer, but to keep us young till we die. Then you wouldn't have to worry about 80 year old people driving down the road, or unable to make a contribution to society, and could get rid of "old folks homes."

aye, paying for a Windows license would be expensive, where i would agree you should go the same route and change to a open source OS. You might have to hire some different techs for your IT department, but in the end you will save money not having to pay for support from Microsoft. As for building your own system (which i work on a government computer so i know what you are talking about) i would say it shouldn't be that hard to find a company willing to sell bulk parts at a pretty reasonable price. I have not looking into this, but i'm sure it's out there.

Yes, but only for fixed wing aircraft, with most of the helicopters having their own separate air intake which is filtered. However, the new designs are still causing heating problems. I think the engineers only real concern is that a component won't overheat and fry itself, because the air isn't filtered outside of the closet very well. I would still like to see any of this come into Military Aviation, but i doubt that will be for a long long time.
