Comment Re:Does anyone ever get over 2 Mb/s download speed (Score 1) 402

I actually have it the other way around. I have a 3 mb/s connection, but in practice i have hit 500 kB/s which is 4 mb/s

thats usually on the odd hours when people are not likely to be on the interwebs here in my apartment complex(we have a DSLAM here which then goes over a oc-1 or 3, don't remember what the guy said)

Submission + - IT Education for Children 1

alphanumerix writes: In a few short weeks I will become a father. I believe that an important aspect of a child's education is computer literacy, much of which can be taught in the home. Are there any slashdotters out there that have experience in teaching kids how to use a PC? There is a mountain of software available for kids and it's a daunting task to sift through it all. Which software titles stand out amongst the best for child education?

I have also been wondering when is a suitable age to introduce a child to a PC? How young is too young? And which version of Windows would be best to start with? My initial inclination was to go with the latest instalment available at the time which might well still be Windows 7. However, on further consideration I'm starting to think XP may be a better a choice to develop a good grounding of familiarity with Windows. My rationale for this is that XP is much less 'visually' intuitive, forcing you to properly learn your way around the menus and file systems. The lack of a sophisticated taskbar search function in XP might also help in this regard. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Firefox

Submission + - No Hardware Acceleration Firefox for Linux (osnews.com) 4

devtty writes: Yesterday, the ninth Firefox 4.0 beta was released. One of the major new features in Firefox 4.0 is hardware acceleration for anything from canvas drawing to video rendering. Sadly, this feature won't make its way to the Linux version of Firefox 4.0. The reason? X' drivers are "disastrously buggy". Boris Zbarsky, long-time Mozilla developer, commented on the issue over at Hacks.Mozilla.org. The release notes for Firefox 4.0 beta 9 noted that it comes with hardware acceleration for Windows 7 and Vista via a combination of Direct2D, DirectX 9 and DirectX 10. Windows XP users will also enjoy hardware acceleration for many operations "using our new Layers infrastructure along with DX9". Furthermore, Mac OS X has excellent OpenGL support, they claim, so they've got that covered as well.

No mention of Linux, and there's a reason for that. "We tried enabling OpenGL on Linux, and discovered that most Linux drivers are so disastrously buggy (think 'crash the X server at the drop of a hat, and paint incorrectly the rest of the time' buggy) that we had to disable it for now," explains Zbarsky, "Heck, we're even disabling WebGL for most Linux drivers, last I checked..."
