Extended Gmail Outage Frustrates Admins 430

CWmike writes "A prolonged, ongoing Gmail outage has some Google Apps administrators pulling their hair out as their end users, including high-ranking executives, complain loudly while they wait for service to be restored. At about 5 p.m. US Eastern on Wednesday, Google announced that the company was aware of the problem preventing Gmail users from logging into their accounts and that it expected to fix it by 9 p.m. on Thursday. Google offered no explanation of the problem or why it would take it so long to solve the problem, a '502' error when trying to access Gmail. Google said the bug is affecting 'a small number of users,' but that is little comfort for Google Apps administrators. Admin Bill W. posted a desperate message on the forum Thursday morning, saying his company's CEO is steaming about being locked out of his e-mail account since around 4 p.m. on Wednesday. It's not the first Gmail outage. So, will this one prompt calls for a service-level agreement for paying customers? And a more immediate question: Why no Gears for offline Gmail access at very least, Google?"

Submission + - MediaDefender and the Streisand Effect (arstechnica.com)

Foldarn writes: It looks like MediaDefender, in an effort to quell the explosion of negative publicity, has instead done the opposite (also known as the Streisand Effect) and made it even more widespread. The folks over at Ars Technica have an article about a few popular BitTorrent sites MegaNova and IsoHunt that are being demanded to remove the ever incriminating emails. What's more, Ars is reporting that it appears that MediaDefender, in response to IsoHunt's decline to remove, may be behind a massive denial of service attack against IsoHunt.

Submission + - New iPod and other toys (ilounge.com)

Foldarn writes: The new iPod has been announced today at Apple's event. Details over on iLounge that give a play by play. Looks like the new iPod (and old ones) are pretty cool. The new iPod, called the iPod Touch is an iPhone without the phone capabilities. The picture and demo showed a nice wi-fi icon. Looks like the iPod is going to be the Zune killer contrary to Microsoft's initial intention! The screen is a widescreen that switches to full screen in a single tap and the overall interface is said to be pretty impressive with smooth 3D graphics. It sounds like a regurgitated iPhone, but I don't think you'll hear too many complaints. The older iPods are going to start going out with what looks like twice the battery capacity as before.

Submission + - Piracy or not? Commercial news says no. 1

Foldarn writes: With an hour long commute to and from work, I listen to a lot of radio. Particularly NPR. There aren't really too many commercials, but one stuck in my mind. They were plugging something they were selling on their own website. Their reasoning for purchasing this item was primarily to make copies of your vinyl records with a record player that had built in recording functionality with it. The wonderful government has taught me that copying CDs, games, movies, ANYTHING makes the recording industry (or the respective agency) poor. If this is the case, why do we see companies profiting off of peoples' willingness to backup their... I mean break the law by copying music? Don't get me wrong, I love to see products like this, but why is this considered OK and copying our own games, movies, or software for backups now considered illegal?
