Um, no. The adobe application updater works just like most updaters - it tells you there is an update and asks if you want to install it. You're quite free to say no, as I do all the time because I'm busy. On the other hand, they push out lots of of updates now that otherwise might have had to wait 2 years for the next version of the software. I'm quite happy with it, I don't mind the cost which is considerably less than I spend on coffee every month, but ymmv.

Comment Re:A Green Light to all Hackers (Score 2) 114

Lately? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Every government in human history has enjoyed powers that were denied to individual citizens. That's pretty much the point of the institution we call a government. We don't want individuals making and enforcing their own laws or drafting people into private armies...

Since smartphones became ubiquitous, yes, you can sit down at a restaurant with someone and ignore them, instead fiddling with your phone. We call such people boors, and do not invite them to dinner again.

Hey Mom, I didn't know you used Slashdot. Good to see you.

But hey, as I've explained before, people using smartphones at the table are often actually engaged in conversation about the content they are looking at and actively sharing it. I know you yearn for the good old days when everyone sat around and engaged in deep, meaningful conversations about important topics, but I have to remind you that's just your dementia kicking in, because that's not what most dinners were like. Usually we just ended up listening to you bitch about how much you hated your job. But hey, don't let any of that get in the way of you judging people with smartphones at the table.

Comment Never compare yourself to performance art (Score 0) 231

When people hear the words "performance art", they imagine a filthy, flea-infested guy with an MFA, fellating an chimp in the middle of times square while his acolytes hand people burning dollar bills and chant about hegemonic paternalism. You don't ever want to compare yourself to that.

Comment Re:Let's start a petition to end the TSA altogethe (Score 1) 223

So your theory is that people should be allowed to bypass security as long as they claim to have a reason to do so? Or that the minimum wage people working these devices should have a complete understanding of their interaction with every other piece of technology on earth?

Clearly a near-tragic mistake was made, but your over-the-top rage is ridiculous.

How about this - if you depend upon a piece of technology to keep you alive, YOU should never subject it to anything that YOU don't know is safe. That's at least as reasonable as your attack on the "retard".

Comment Re:How about just READING THE BOOKS? (Score 1) 447

Yes, god forbid anyone should want to watch those "moving pictures" that kids today are so fond of. We all know that it's impossible to enjoy a story in more than one artistic format, that's why I only consume my stories via wandering minstrels who pass them along as part of our oral tradition.
