Gas lacks the requisite heat to really sear a steak properly.
My gas grill gets to about 700 degrees fahrenheit. I believe that's plenty hot enough to sear.
PROTIP: Put a few sticks in your gas grill just before you put the steak on. Nothing beats that wood-smoke taste.
