Submission + - DVT in Slashdotters

balloonhead writes: "A New Zealand study has shown a disproportionate amount of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) cases in sedentary office workers. DVT can have a variety of outcomes, including the blood clot dislodging and travelling to the lungs, where it can cause a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism (PE). The study implicated long hours sat at desks, stating the main groups affected are workers in the information technology industry and in call centres. Slashdotters beware!"

Submission + - MP tries to Klinon to power

Daehenoc writes: From http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,21372488-1376 2,00.html: "A Finnish member of parliament is aiming for re-election by campaigning with a translation of his website into Klingon, used in the TV series Star Trek. "Some have thought it is blasphemy to mix politics and Klingon," said Jyrki Kasvi, an ardent Trekkie. "Others say it is good if politicians can laugh at themselves." He said his politics posed some translation difficulties, since Klingon does not have words for matters such as tolerance, or for many colours, including green — the party under whose banner he is running in the national elections on March 18. Non-warriors can also access the site, http://www.kasvi.org/, in English, Swedish and Finnish.'

Submission + - Google Earth to be on the Apple iPhone

An anonymous reader writes: According to Virtual World Times Google Earth will be on the Apple's iPhone. Given that published reports say the iPhone will be a closed system but Google Earth could be considered an open system it begs the question as to whether Google Earth holds an opportunity for developers to develop with the iPhone in mind. 30,000 developers are creating mashups and other stuff on top of Google Earth. Additional Google earth stats are at Virtual World Times

Submission + - Google assists Indian goverment censorship

An anonymous reader writes: Google's Orkut has made a deal to provide IP addresses of posters of content deemed objectionable by Bombay police. They object to, among others, posts against certain Indian personalities, young women admiring Indian mobsters, and, amazingly, "anti-Indian words" (!).

Submission + - New Horizons Probe Returns New Images of Jupiter

SeaDour writes: "The Pluto-bound New Horizons space probe, launched a little over a year ago, recently succeeded in passing through a narrow navigational keyhole by Jupiter. Using the gas giant's tremendous gravity, the craft now has a significant boost toward its final destination, shaving three years off its journey. As it passed through the Jovian system, the probe took some fantastic images of the neighborhood, including detailed observations of erupting volcanoes on Io, time-lapse photography of Jupiter's tumultuous atmosphere, and even the faint ring system that was first discovered in Voyager photography. These new images prove the tremendous capabilities of the small probe, which is set to reach Pluto in 2015."

Submission + - Inflatable mirrors could cut solar cost to $0.29/w

Damien1972 writes: A new technology using inflatable mirrors could dramatically cut the price of solar power to around $0.29 per watt, making the renewable energy source cost competitive with coal and other fossil fuels. The tensegrity-based concentrated photovoltaic system could open up vast areas of the United States for solar farming, whereby farmers could produce both agricultural products and clean energy. The technology has been developed by CoolEarth Solar, based in Livermore, CA.

Submission + - MPAA Steals Code, Violates Linkware License

MBrichacek writes: "A blogger who wrote his own blogging engine called Forest Blog recently noticed that none other than the MPAA was using his work, and had completely violated his linkware license by removing all links back to the Forest Blog site, and had not credited him in any way. According to Patrick, it isn't something new to find his blogging software being used like this. What he finds really odd is that an organisation whose goal is to "protect" copyrighted creative works has no qualms in, essentially, stealing other people's work."

Submission + - Ballmer repeats threats against Linux

daria42 writes: Steve Ballmer has reissued Microsoft's patent threat against Linux, warning open-source vendors that they must respect his company's intellectual property. In a no-nonsense presentation to New York financial analysts last week, Microsoft's chief executive said the company's partnership with Novell, which it signed in November 2006, "demonstrated clearly the value of intellectual property, even in the open-source world."

Feed News: Here we go again (penny-arcade.com)

Gabe: You might have seen this story on CNN about the teens that murdered a homeless guy and then equated it to the sort of thrill one might get from a violent video game. There will be plenty of articles focusing on these kids and their crime. I"d like to take a second and talk about the parents of these teenagers instead. It is the job of a parent to teach their children certain rules. Obviously the rules themselves and the emphasis each family places on them will vary, but there are certain universal constants that these parents obviously failed to pass on.
