Submission + - Windows Vista Aka Annoyances

LiquidNitrogen writes: "Its a known fact that most of the Windows Vista components have been rebuilt from scratch and a lot of time and effort has gone in to bring it to this stage. Vista is surely much enhanced and have a better user experience than any old Windows OS release. The underlying issue with Vista is the fairly small amount of bugs that would let any one ponder over the level and quality of testing that has gone before the release. Some of these bugs surely hints that Vista might not be yet ready for a production environment. Vista has some of silliest of bugs such as showning file size in negative or not opening dream scene because aero theme is not selected, though it is. Some of the other annoyances in vista are not updating the open file dialog and doubling the file size in status bar on Refresh/F5."

Submission + - What is the best open source collaboration tool?

Mentalus writes: I'm working for a small company which specializes in writing custom software as a consultant service. We really need some tools for project tracking, some kind of wiki and also a calendar server. The problem is, the choices in this area are enormous! Which tools do you prefer? My former employer uses TRAC, but is there a better alternative?

Submission + - H1-B visa abuse by Indian outsourcing firms

sledge_hammer writes: I found several articles detailing the ways in which the H1-B visas are being abused by Indian outsourcing firms. It provides evidence to a lot of the arguments already made on Slashdot including how lack of skilled labor should be driving IT wages up. Even though I am an Indian citizen that would need an H1-b to work in this country, I have to say that this a gross miscarriage of the program and raising the visa cap is not the solution to the problem. Personally, these abusive practices have resulted in me not having an H1 visa slot after this year's lottery even though I am a recent mech. engineering graduate of a top 10 school working for an industrial goods fortune 500 company and getting paid better on par with my peers and industry standards. http://www.sharedprosperity.org/bp187.html — Paper from the Economic Policy Institute detailing problems with the current system and ways in which it can be abused. http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/conten t/feb2007/db20070208_553356.htm — Article detailing how numerous outsourcing firms are abusing the system to gain visas. This in turn prevents legitimate employers from hiring foreign nationals. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/ch ronicle/archive/2007/03/30/EDGRJN7CFB1.DTL — Article about how Microsoft has been abusing the system for years. BTW sorry about the links, but I am a n00b, so I have no clue how to do HTML tags! :-)

Submission + - Question on Vista's Testing

LiquidNitrogen writes: The author of the blog cacheyourcash has found three bugs in less than 4 months that would question the extent of testing or even design that has gone to built windows Vista. Some of the silliest bugs in Vista are "Showing file size in negative (minus)" or "not updating the status bar on hitting refresh". It seems small pieces like these which though are used every day were not tested thoroughly or dropped due to other reasons.

Submission + - Microsoft shareholders paid for upside surprise

An anonymous reader writes: According to Carl Howe at Seeking Alpha, "Microsoft achieved record breaking earnings during the Vista launch quarter by taking money out of its assets, not through amazing sales of Vista and Office."

The article says, "Microsoft's own numbers tell us the way it is making more and more each quarter is partly funded by making each share worth less and less in assets. At the very least, this fact that Microsoft is dipping into its assets to pay for its record earnings makes me question just how successful those Vista and Office launches really were. Judging from the reaction of Microsoft's stock price after those record earnings — and the fact that it remains lower than it was three months ago before the Vista launch — that fact hasn't been lost on Wall Street either."
