Anonymity is an ever more important topic in a society where internet filters are installed and people are sued because they visited the wrong website.
I2P 0.7.1 has been released with a whole bunch of new features and improvements for users wanting to browse, mail, torrent or 'insert your favourite web activity here' (yes, there is porn). The new release is available for download."

For those who don't know, GSoC is where Google funds student's to participate in Open Source projects and has been running for 5 years, bringing together over 2600 students and 2500 mentors from nearly 100 countries worldwide. Google has just announced the projects which will be mentor organizations this year. It includes a great list of Open Source projects from a wide range of different genres, include content management systems, compilers, many programming languages and even a bunch of games!"

Mathiasdm writes: The Invisible Internet Project, also known as I2P, has seen its 0.7 release (download). I2P uses multiple encryption layers, and routing through several other computers to hide both sender and receiver of messages. On top of the network, regular services such as mail, browsing, file sharing and chatting are supported.
This major version change marks a new period, in which the I2P developers wish to spread the word about the secure network. This new release includes improvements in the built-in bittorrent client, changes in the network exploration software and an experimental new address system using base32 hashes of destination keys.

kaos07 writes: 3D Realms main man George Broussard has dropped word (http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showthread.php?t=29639/) that a trailer for the elusive Duke Nukem Forever will be released tomorrow, no joke.

"Last Saturday we had our annual company Christmas party. It was a lot of fun as usual but it featured one special surprise," explained Broussard. "It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever. After seeing the teaser we thought it was something we should share with all of you and while it's just a teaser, rest assured more is coming.

The story goes that some blokes presented a teaser trailer to staff at the office Xmas party this year. The teaser trailer will be released tomorrow (19th December) at 12pm CST. ButcherCH writes: There is a new software development and hosting platform, called Origo that not only provides free hosting for open source software but also for closed source software. As opposed to Google code it has fewer restrictions on the siz of the releases and supports metalink It also has some neat features like wiki pages, a subversion repository, an issue tracker, a simple interface and various API integrations (Eclipse, Visual Studio and EiffelStudio). It's hosted by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

Dell has announced three different systems with Ubuntu 7.04 installed: the XPS 410n and Dimension E520n desktops and the Inspiron E1505n notebook. However, those expecting lower prices for their Linux boxes may be disappointed because there is little or no price differential between the Linux and Windows models. javipas writes: "Today could mark a turning point for the history of Linux. Dell will start today 4pm CST selling three machines with Ubuntu 7.04 preinstalled. The two desktops (XPS 410n, $899 and Dimension E520n, $599) and the notebook (Inspiron E1505n, $599)will be the first three machines with the popular Linux distribution installed by default. Dell has announced that they will provide hardware support, and they've created a new site devoted to give further Linux support and updates. At the moment the offer is available in the US, but we all hope the rest of the world can enjoy it very soon. Good luck!"
