Submission + - Copyright or License Your Resume?

An anonymous reader writes: Have you ever submitted a resume to a recruiter, and the recruiter significantly modified your resume for submission to a prospective employer? In fact, they munged it to the point that you feel that not only the format was changed, but substantial content was modified? Over the years, I have modified my resume many times, working to make it as readable and informative as I can. I will admit it is long, but I have a lot of experience, and I feel it is well laid out and pretty easy to read. I feel that some of the modifications that recruiters make actually detract from the format, and sometimes make the meaning different from the original intent. I can understand removing my contact information when submitting, as they don't want employers doing an end-run around them to contact prospects. Would it be a good idea to attach some kind of copyright, or require that recruiters submit resumes as I submitted to them?

Submission + - SchizOS Features the Personalities of Linux (distrooftheday.org)

An anonymous reader writes: Some clever fellow has decided to use streaming virtual machine images to showcase linux distributions. There are so many awesome developers out there building different flavors of linux for me, but its so time consuming to try them all out to see if their goals are in line with mine. Also, its important to raise awareness of whats out there so that our community can spend less time duplicating work unnecessarily. Some folks are alreading doing a great job with this, but this just takes it one step further.

Submission + - CPS-3 Encryption Scheme Broken (exophase.com)

zshadow writes: "It's taken awhile, ten years to be exact, but Andreas Naive has successfully managed to break the protection on Capcom's CPS-3 arcade system board. The CPS-3 powered less than a dozen arcade classics, including JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Red Earth, and Street Fighter III. The security system of the CPS-3 was rather advanced for its time. Any tampering to the game's security cartridge would result in the decryption key being erased, thereby rendering the respective cartridge useless. So, the decryption is broken, what does this all mean? In one word: Emulation. Now that the decryption task is done, the folks over at MAME have already started work on a CPS-3 emulator."

JavaScript 2) is now available. Language geeks will be interested to find that the reference implementation of ECMAScript is being written in Standard ML, rather than pseudocode."
Censorship

Submission + - Indian Nationalists Censor Orkut

starkravingmad writes: The Economic Times is running a story on Hindu nationalists in India threatening to wreck internet cafes that don't block parts of Orkut that the vigilantes find offensive. From the article:

"Orkut is used by many destructive elements to spread canards about India, Hindus, our gods and cultural heritage," said Abhijit Phanse, president of Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena, the student group.
"We are gently telling Internet cafe owners that it is their responsibility to see that surfers do not use their facility to carry out such hate campaigns," he said.
"Or else, we will have to do that job for them." Last week, dozens of Shiv Sena workers vandalised some Internet centres, saying they were not stopping their customers from accessing Orkut groups involved in sending hate messages.
The campaign is being run by the Shiv Sena, which has, in the past, fought against such threats to Indian society as Valentine's Day, the movie "Fire" which showed a lesbian love affair, and more recently, Richard Gere. They hold power in the Mumbai local government, and in the past have formed governments at the state level and were part of the coalition in the last national government in India.

And just to prove that they are more than an illiterate medieval mob who like to burn things down, they are taking a 21st century approach to censorship this time:

Phanse said his group was developing a special software that Internet service providers could install to block any message containing certain words and phrases such as "I hate" or "I despise". "The software should be ready in 2-3 months"

Submission + - Court: Cops Can Steal and Lie to Conduct Searches (lawbean.com)

Spamicles writes: "Police officers faked a car jacking in order to search a car that was suspected to be used in drug trafficking. They discovered drugs and arrested the owners of the car. A lower court ruled that the warrant-less search and seizure violated the Fourth Amendment and that the drugs could not be used as evidence. This ruling was overturned today."

Submission + - Dell will preinstall Linux this month

javipas writes: "There have been several Slashdot news that made clear the Dell's proposal for preinstalling Linux on some of their desktop and notebook PCs. No one knew if that could come sooner or later, but Steven Vaughan-Nichols reveals that sources close to Dell confirm that option by the end of this month. Possible Linux distributions: openSUSE, Fedora, Novell SUSE Linux, Red Hat Linux and, of course, Ubuntu, which as you may know, is used by Michael Dell himself."

Submission + - Russia's floating nuclear plants

slashdotmsiriv writes: Russia has started building the world's first floating nuclear power station. Russian officials view the highly mobile nuclear power plants on ships as a safe way to power remote isolated areas, without the risk of nuclear proliferation. Greenpeace however, strongly disagrees with this approach and calls it "The most dangerous project that has been launched by the atomic sector in the whole world over the past decade"

Judging by the safety record of reactors in submarines and icebreaking ships, is Greenpeace once again overreacting over nuclear power? Also, who will have administrative control over those ships, Russia or the hosting country?
