SpaceX plans two Internet satellite constellations. The first will be in low-Earth orbit and they will launch a prototype satellite this year. They will begin launching operational satellites in 2019 and the constellation will be completed by 2024, at which time they will be offering global connectivity. The second, very low-Earth constellation may replace today's terrestrial ISPs. What about regulation?

Cuba has around 30 streetnets, which could potentially be connected to the Internet. Gaspar, a small town in central Cuba, would be a good place for a pilot project. They have a popular streetnet and the town is only 25 kilometers from the province capital. http://laredcubana.blogspot.com/2017/05/why-not-connect-gaspar-social-streetnet.html.

Yesterday, DonaldJTrump.com sent email soliciting donations saying that "tonight also marks your last chance to go down in the earliest records of our presidency as a special 100-Day Member." The solicitation is tacky and possibly fraudulent, saying nothing about the organization one is joining or who gets the money.

The Wall Street Journal says the White House is pushing Cuba to make deals with Google and General Electric. Google has spent a lot of time in Cuba and ETECSA, the Cuban government's monopoly telecommunication provider, will start a fiber trial in Havana this month. If that trial were a joint project of ETECSA and Google, it would be a win for the Cuban people, Google and the Obama administration.

In 1961, Newton Minow famously called television a "vast wasteland" in a talk to the National Association for Broadcasters. He was disappointed that it had not lived up to its promise as a medium for culture, education and information. Will the troll-ridden, fake-news Internet become a vast wasteland?

The Internet was a major source of news — fake and real — during the election campaign. The operators of fake sites, whether motivated by politics or greed, are often anonymous. We avoid voter fraud by requiring verification of ones name, age and address. A verifiable real-names domain registration policy would discourage information fraud.

When President Obama picked Tom Wheeler, a former lobbyist for the mobile and cable industries, to head the FCC, many expected him to be a puppet of the ISP industry, but he surprised them by opting to serve the public interest, not the ISP industry, on several important issues. Will "populist" Donald Trump surprise us and work to make the American Internet great again?

Over 50 years ago, Ivan Sutherland envisioned then built the first head-mounted augmented reality display. This week, testing and certification of WiGig — very fast, short range wireless connectivity — began and it will be in computers, phones and tablets next year. That will enable untethered, high-fidelity virtual and augmented reality.
