Submission + - 3rd edition of TopDev: the Open Coding Contest

Chrystel COASSIN writes: "The third edition of the programming contest TopDev 2007 will take place on March 24th-25th 2007.
This contest is original by its independance from any languages. The winners will not be the fastest programmer, but the ones who will propose the greatest technical solution with the most complete documentation.("it's not a speed contest, upon an arithmetical problem").

Anyone can contest TopDev (students or professionals, alone or in pair,...). More than one thousand participants are expected for this world-wide contest. The previous edition gathered 750 concurrents from 65 countries.
A realistic and detailed business case is to be realized using any language (Java, PHP, C#, ASP.Net, Python) within only 60 hours, from home.

This contest is managed by a programmers association, independent from any programming software editors, in relation with the French Minister for Education and Research. A jury of professors of Universities (from U.S., Canada, France, Belgium, ...) decides on the winner.

Submission + - Does Global Warming Cause C02?

StealthyRoid writes: "A documentary set to air on BBC-4 on Thursday, March 8, makes the claim that the global warming alarmist camp has got the relationship between increasing C02 levels and global warming exactly backwards: That an increase in the Earth's temperature is the cause of elevated C02, and the slight uptick in global average temperature that we've been seeing is the result of cosmological effects, not human interference. The documentary also claims that the attempted "fixes" for global warming demanded by the alarmist movement (massive energy output reductions, de-industrialization, etc...) are going to end up hurting poor nations to the point where they're condemned to life in the stone age."
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Real Reason for Vista Delay Found

tb3 writes: "The real reason for delay in the release of Vista has been discovered, according to an article to appear in Wired. In the article, an ex-Microsoft employee claims that Apple tricked Microsoft into attempting to develop what was then code-named "Longhorn" in INTERCAL. INTERCAL is an obscure programming language originally designed as a joke, but since it is well known that Bill Gates has no sense of humor, he forged ahead with Longhorn development using the language, refusing to give Apple any perceived advantage in the OS development wars."

Submission + - Free Email Sercives Cashing in on Spam?

An anonymous reader writes: I dont't know if you noticed, but whenever the traffic on a free email account on sites like hotmail or yahoo decreases, the level of spam delivered to the inbox increases. Is there a profit-motive there? Or pure coincidence? Going from about 1 spam-mail to about 6 in am month could make you wonder.

Submission + - Defragment windows up to 10X faster

crazlunatic writes: "Windows users have long been complaining about extremely long defrag times. In Vista, the situation is worsened as users are forced to go thorugh the analyze process and are sometimes left with a defrag session that doesn't end! VistaRewired has written up an easy tutorial for XP and Vista users who want to greatly decrease their time spent defragging. Using this tutorial, the author managed to defrag 20 gigabytes in only 8 minutes compared to 75 minutes using the Windows defrag tool . A combination of software including contig.exe and Power Defragmenter are used."

Submission + - Developing Expanded Games for SNES?

bluefoxlucid writes: I've recently acquired an FC Twin, a console that loads both SNES and NES video games. The patents on both of these Nintendo systems have all expired, making custom hardware and games legal without a Nintendo license. Besides letting me play Super Metroid again, this has sparked an idea: since SNES hardware can be feasibly obtained, why not create an open dev kit? In my quest to decide the feasibility of this, I've looked to the expansion chip capabilities that spawned the Super FX. My thinking is to drop in a small ARM or eZ80 to load developed games from an SD card; but I don't know much about the SNES technically, so I can't even give a rough sketch on how this would work. Does anyone have any good information on the SNES hardware, or know somewhere I could look to get the info I need to do this?
