Bethesda Announces New Fallout Game For 2010 254

On Monday Bethesda announced a new title in the popular Fallout series called New Vegas, set for release sometime in 2010. It's planned for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. They said it wasn't a sequel to the highly-acclaimed Fallout 3, but rather a brand new game set in the same universe, though they confirmed that it will be similar in style to Fallout 3. The new game will be developed by Obsidian Entertainment, a studio containing members of the original Fallout team, which Bethesda's Pete Hines discussed in an interview with Shacknews. The Fallout series also made headlines earlier this week when Bethesda trademarked the name for TV and film.

I personally which, that the conficker virus should do as much damage as possible and render the whole interwebs useless for a few days, so that our security geniuses get a hint on how sane it is to set up the majority of computer systems with the same OS, especially such a vulnerable one.

You mean kind of like AIG? Where all financial institutions were insured under the same company... I think what we can learn is that diversity in any market place is absolutely essential.

Mobile Gaming Market Heats Up 18

A few days ago, we discussed Sony's announcement of a slew of new titles for the PSP, part of their plan to reinvigorate the platform. Unfortunately, according to analyst Nicholas Lovell, it may be too late for the PSP to achieve what Sony had hoped. He says gaming on the iPhone and iPod Touch are rapidly expanding to fill that section of the market. Despite this, rumors have been swirling once more that the PSP2 is under development, and while Sony wouldn't confirm or deny, they were at least willing to talk about the rumors. Meanwhile, the App Store is dealing with a flood of titles that shows no sign of slowing, making it somewhat difficult to keep tabs on the higher-quality games. An Apple spokesperson discussed this in an interview with Pocket Gamer, and also mentioned that they'd be OK with a community gaming service similar to Xbox Live, should somebody decide to make one. It's likely that Apple will soon see more serious competition from Android Market; now that a pricing system is going online, the major publishers have more of an incentive to bring games to the platform. The Guardian's games blog recently went over some of the top games available on Android.

New Nanotech Fabric Never Gets Wet 231

holy_calamity writes "New Scientist reports on a simple coating for polyester that renders it unwettable — even after two months underwater it emerges dry to the touch. Water cannot attach to the new fabric thanks to nanostructured filaments and a structure that traps a constant air layer. One potential use is for low-drag swim wear."

Submission + - Internet Usage Boosts Mobile Bill to $54,000

Secret to Raising Smart Kids writes: "A factory worker from Darlington, Yorks who went on a TV show downloading spree after misunderstanding the terms of his cellphone contract has been hit with a bill for $54,000. After taking out a cell phone contract which he thought included 'unlimited' internet use, Ian Simpson got some advice from a friend who showed him how to connect his cell phone to his laptop. "My mate told me how to wire my mobile to my laptop as a modem. It meant I could download faster than on the handset and get a proper internet connection in my flat." After downloading TV shows for a month, Simpson's service was disconnected: "I probably downloaded 20 or 30 TV shows and four albums" he said. "I assumed it'd be OK, but they cut me off. I rang up and they said I owed them nearly £30,000." Luckily for him it seems that Vodafone will "try to come to some sympathetic arrangement" despite being taken unawares by "the intensity of Ian's downloading.""

Submission + - FBI to Use Digital Billboards for Most Wanted

Ponca City, We Love You writes: "The FBI's most wanted will soon appear on 150 digital billboards in 20 cities nationwide as the agency begins airing mug shots along major roadways following a successful test run in Philadelphia that led to several arrests. The billboards will be used to post photos and information on recently committed crimes in a matter of minutes. "What law enforcement tells us is it contributes to an environment where the criminal feels they have no where to go. A lot of times they end up just giving up," said Jeff Golimowski, spokesman for Outdoor Advertising Association of America. "It serves a dual purpose." The billboards will also feature photographs of missing children and a 24-hour hotline number for the public."

Submission + - Is the HD DVD Format Dead?

Reservoir Hill writes: "Warner Brothers announced that it will release high-definition DVDs exclusively in Sony's Blu-ray format, dealing a big blow to Toshiba's rival HD DVD technology. Warner Brothers is Hollywood's biggest seller of DVDs, representing about 18 to 20 percent of sales in the United States and was one of the few studios backing both formats. "A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry," said Kevin Tsujihara, President of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. Saul Hansell at the NY Times says he wouldn't spend money on an HD DVD player until this all sorts out and expects many consumers to return their Christmas HD DVD players and exchange them for Blu-ray devices."
