So, a very simple test: If researchers routinely use the patent database as a source of inspiration and a place to find tools to solve specific problems, and are very willing to look for and license patents that help them make progress, then they're good and useful. If, however, patents are an obstruction, if researchers actively avoid looking at patents to avoid possible treble damages from willful infringement, or if they block useful avenues of research, then they're not providing any value and should be discarded.

I think regulated FRAND patents would be necessary if you had any patents on genes at all. Unfortunately, that means there will be special interest groups that will try to carve exceptions in to the regulations (and the laws supporting them). However, managed properly, FRAND could work for genes that are deemed patentable because the government can make sure the barrier to entry is low enough so that there's no Apple/Samsung/Motorola crap going on.

Don't worry, there are still plenty of people drinking the Kool-aid. People tend to chain themselves to a particular ideology because it makes life easier to absorb. The "us vs. them" mentality is a basic human survival mechanism.

What will be interesting to find out is how Obama is perceived after the "not so nice" parts of his healthcare law take effect in a couple years––then scholars truly can debate who was worse, Bush II or Obama.

We can easily reach a compromise between Democrats and Republicans on this matter. The answer? Make guns illegal and get rid of welfare and other entitlements. Then the poor people can't rise up and destroy you, because they can't get guns, while the government is still heavily armed with non-lethal weaponry. (That's me being facetious, for those who cannot detect it).

I have mod points, but I want to chime in on this topic because I'm in the field and I know what the job market wants.

Here is what you do:
Find a University with a Software Engineering program. Software Engineers are in such high demand there are more jobs available for them than there are applicants. Computer Science more like an extension of Math. If you like Math, then ComS is fine, but if you just want to program, you'll find yourself selling yourself short with a typical ComS education.

Next, find out the prerequisite classes for your Software Engineering core classes. Get as much done as you can at a community college. Ask the University if they'll take 3 credits from community college class X as valid for their own Introduction to C/C++ programming class. Do this with every class you take.

Spend 2 years at the University. Generally, you can only transfer in half your credits for B.S. in Software Engineering to the University. Look and see if you're already there.

As a former professor of mine said, "Know your shit." Do an internship or go to a job interview, be nicely dressed, and choose a company you want to work for. That's right, you get to choose where you want to work, rather than taking whatever job is available at companies X, Y, and Z.

Good Luck.

Quit complaining about OS X unless you can put in a substitute window manager. You don't have to use Aqua or Quartz, just like the gp implied. Hell, I've booted a desktop mac off of Darwin and run KDE on top of it-–no OS X specific GUI stuff required. If you have the capability, a few simple changes in config files and you be running in X11 with an xterm at log on.

If you can not do that, then you need to hand in your geek card and not post such ignorance.

As a child in a medical type family, let me first say to you: Never, ever ask a secretary, head nurse, or anyone else for anything like that. Go straight to the doctor. The doctors have all the power and their subordinates like to think they do.

The doctors know the rules, and if you had just gone to the doctor and asked, there should have been no problem. However, since you asked someone who either (a) did not know how to get the records, (b) did not know if they had the authority to give the records, or (c) you've just made the women's life a lot more complicated, because if she gives you the records herself she may be fired and/or sued. Don't even ask a technician for the results, they probably won't tell you for fear of being disciplined.

Basically, you asked the wrong person for the right information. Always ask the doctor––they can get it to you. He/she ordered the test, he/she is on the top of the totem pole, and he/she can do whatever the hell they want because they have passed board exams, medical school, and have M.D. after their name.

That said, the lady was stupid for not having a nurse ask the doctor about the issue. As to your manner, there are some good posts above that highlight the benefits of not being a dick.
