Comment If you've been following their effort (Score 1) 84

I'm pretty sure Uber was the company that almost got in serious trouble for hiring a Google engineer who proceeded to try to steal Google's self-driving tech. Also the same company that had an autonomous vehicle run someone over. So no wonder this department is in dire straits. Google's currently got the best self-driving system and even they don't feel it is quite ready yet.

Comment Can't beat physics (Score 1) 84

There is always going to be a delay to shoot a signal hundred of miles up and then back down so that's something that unfortunately isn't going to go away. It's physics that dictate that a wired link will always work better than a wireless link. As long as StarLink can offer inexpensive and "reasonable" service to the rural community it will be welcomed.

Comment Saved how? Browsers were always a popularity war. (Score 2) 318

The sad reality is that the general public will always use the browser that works "best" for them. It was never about security or anything that any browser company ever did. People for example use Google because it works for them. They'll drop it faster than you can blink if they can find something that works better. Mozilla was for a while able to build their business model on that popularity but as anyone knows the public can be fickle. I use Seamonkey for example, probably the most direct descendant of Netscape for nostalgic reasons. It doesn't work as well as Chrome or probably even Firefox but I hardly expect it to be "saved" for that simple reason.

Comment A question of whether you value state secrets (Score 0) 191

I would hardly consider Snowden a hero, at least to the US anyhow. Snowden is just someone far to naive to be working with state secrets. The reality is to protect a country, a lot of nasty things go on behind the scenes. If countries seriously tried to play the white knight they would very likely end up like Snowden, without a home and career because that's the reality of how things work if you consider everyone. At the end of the day pardoning Snowden would mean that it is somehow okay to give up state secrets which you likely had signed an agreement with the full understanding that doing what Snowden did would land you in jail. Considering many of those secrets could compromise your country, that's not something that seems like a good idea.

Comment Silly complaint... (Score 1) 9

So you're telling me if you run a restaurant you're required to tell customers to go to competitors because your food is too good? Google isn't some public service where everyone including their competitors are treated equally. Of course they will promote their own stuff, it would be stupid not to.

Comment Google's is better (Score 1) 3

Google has a more reliable actual self-driving system that has a whole lot more expensive sensors and has zero deaths caused by it so far yet even they don't feel comfortable enough to release it commercially yet. I think that the German courts banning Tesla from advertising a feature that a lot of less informed folks believe is "perfectly safe" is a good action considering the vast number of uninformed folks out there concerning this technology.

Comment Refillable Ink Cartridges (Score 2) 84

I own an Epson Artisan 1430 inkjet wide-format printer and long converted it to refillable pigment ink cartridges. While it can be a little tricky to deal with at time, I haven't had to buy a single cartridge for it in ages now and I have about 1/2 litre of bulk ink to last almost a lifetime for me. A few things I learned about traditional inkjet printers, not only is the ink ridiculously expensive but all the waste ink from cleaning cycles is dumped into a felt pad inside your printer meaning that at some point it will reach end of life unless you modify your printer. I also own a color laser printer but for photos lasers do not approach the quality of an inkjet. My only other tip would be to find a printer that can use pigment (not dye) ink. Dye ink (especially third party ink and paper) tends to fade.

Comment Need to start using reusable containers (Score 1) 87

I've got a ridiculously huge stack of #5 plastic containers (cleaned) and stashed away in my home somewhere since it seems like a shame they should be tossed out after one use and sadly my local recycling won't take them. The real solution would be to get manufacturers to standardize on containers and reuse them. Sure advertising could take a hit but that's quite the waste.

Comment Questionable arguements (Score 1) 407

The way I see this is like like two mountain climbers where one claims if you jump without a parachute or something you'll probably die while the second climber claiming that's false because your finger might not be broken on impact. Point is, this climate change has been predicted for years and it's only been getting more and more accurate with time.
