read up a bit on "vwap". is that high frequency in you ever-so-informed opinion? the portfolio in question was intended as a 5-day vwap.

the problem was that the volume was multiplied by 1000 per transaction. you mean to buy 100 shares at market? here's your 100,000 shares at market! the unusual volume caused the individual stocks within the portfolio to spike up/down. but hft it was not.

though knight does hft, that wasn't the problem here. it was a simple 4.5 billion dollar balanced portfolio that the client wanted to trade as a 5-day-vwap. "buy these stock over 5 days, sell these other stocks over the same 5 days". a 5 day vwap is in NO way "high frequency trading". it's almost the opposite of hft. if i wanted to buy 200 shares at market every 3 minutes for 5 days, would you consider that hft? (i know that's actually twap, but good luck explaining vwap to this genius). the purpose is to minimize market impact.

flipping stock was not what was intended, and not what happened.

the frequency was not high - the volume per transaction was incorrectly multiplied by 1000. the bug was that the "200" in the example above was converted into "200,000". 200,000 shares at market WILL have an immediate impact on most stocks.

actually, hft colo systems are NOT in manhattan. there are no exchange datacenters on the island because the real estate is too valuable. they're all in jersey. directedge is in "ny4", which is actually in secaucus (the stinkiest part of) nj. nyse is in mahwah nj. i believe bats is in weehawken nj (nj3 datacenter). nasdaq is in carteret nj.

so actually, colo isn't all that expensive because the exchanges are all in previously undeveloped swamp land. the problem, of course, is deciding which ONE exchange you're going to colo with, because they're all a few miles apart.

i agree that it can cost over $10,000 for birth. the itemized bill i got from the hospital ~4 years was for over $60,000. fortunately, i am employed/insured, so it cost ~$400 out-of-pocket (plus insurance premiums plus co-payments for each prenatal visit). the itemized bill was actually funny because it showed a) the procedure, b) the cost, c) what the insurance company paid, and d) how much i owed out of pocket.

most of the items looked something like this; a) nurse visit for blood pressure reading, b) $2,500 due, c) $15 paid by insurance, and d) $0 owed

if i had no insurance, then a) and b) would remain the same. c) would be $0, and d) would be $2,500

broken arm for $600? emergency room x-rays cost over $1,000. unless maybe you had an appointment at a radiologist prior to the break occurring, and therefore didn't have an er visit? or maybe the casting cost negative dollars?

oh, now i see. i just got trolled.

that must have sucked. as soon as you agreed to "yes i want you to stop asking stupid questions", it rolled back all of the changes, and you had to start from scratch. adobe software ONLY stops asking you stupid questions when you uninstall it. but first you have to agree to "yes, i want to remove this horrible, horrible steaming pile of turd from my system" and "yes, i really, really, REALLY want to remove this horrible, horrible steaming pile of turd from my system" and "yes, i understand that doing so may prevent my system from being hijacked, and i still want to uninstall it".

do you keep your books on some sort of bookshelf? that is hardware that you purchased to support storage of books. the last bookshelf i bought cost ~$150. nice bookshelves cost even more. and the space for said bookshelf (or stack on the floor) is also a required prerequisite. your $100+ hardware investment for reading covers storage as well.

there are vast numbers of out-of-copyright e-books available for less than your "$2-$3" price range (see project gutenberg and/or free kindle book section). you also have the ability to buy large/~complete collections of out-of-copyright for <$5 (verne for $3, poe for $0.89, shakespeare for $2, etc).

e-books aren't the end-all solution to reading, but they certainly have their place.

Google Shows Off Ad-Supported Cell Phone 290

taoman1 writes "Today Google showed off a ad-supported cellphone that the company plans to offer for free to interested parties. The product could reach the marketplace within a year, and will offer Google search, email, and a web browser. 'The move would echo another recent product launched by a phone industry outsider, Apple Inc.'s iPhone. But Google's product would draw its revenue from a sharply different source, relying on commercial advertising dollars instead of the sticker price of at least US$499 for an iPhone and $60 per month for the AT&T Inc. service plan. Negotiating the fairest way to split those advertising revenues with service providers could be a big hurdle for Google, one analyst said. Another problem is the potential that consumers could be scared off by the prospect of listening to advertisements before being able to make phone calls, said Jeff Kagan, a wireless and telecommunications industry analyst in Atlanta.'"
