If you have fixed/baseline compute - host on your own. You should at least get some of the AWS' margin (granted their margin might be better due to economies of scale). For reminder of compute use cloud to scale demand as needed. This will not work for all. In smaller companies you will incur adtionall cost of maintenance, DBA, SysAdmins, etc.
