Yeah, blindingly trivial; if you like munging through some hideous CAML fragments to extract meaningful metadata.. (CAML is SharePoint's XML schema nightmare). Getting the documents is the easy part; metadata, authorization info, and all those nifty bits is the tricky part.

Don't get me wrong - there's little standardization around this subject, and every CMS vendor fucks up quite a bit. They all have proprietary APIs; at least SharePoint spits XML.
It still feels like pulling teeth. Next version is supposed to have a LINQ interface; hopefully that's better.

Well, please read the article. He was suffering from Stage 4 lung cancer, diabetes and high BP. I'm no doctor, but that looks fairly terminal to me. Why the fuck should I hang around as a vegetable?

Suicide is devastating to those who care, yes; but in this case at least, there's no selfishness. He saw that he was beyond extended support; and decided to go. Committing suicide takes a phenomenal amount of courage, and/or some mental instability. In this case, it seems to be mostly the former. Rest in Peace.

It's like turning up with your purpose-built race car at the city center, and whining about speed humps.

Well SharePoint doesn't do any of those things, and the Office integration part sucks. Have you seen system requirements for SharePoint for a large organization? Have you administered a non-trivial sized Sharepoint instance? Have you managed a SharePoint version to version migration? It's a PITA, and completely overkill for most applications. The OP was right, most people don't need SharePoint.

It's the new generation nightmare - almost like MS Access and Lotus Notes rolled into one - easy for some tasks, ridiculously painful for others. And don't get me started on the whole song & dance people go through to build custom applications on top of it...

Dunning-Kruger indeed.

Submission + - Google OS Announced 12

shystershep writes: "Rumors have been floating around for years that Google was planning an OS to compete with Window. As of Tuesday night, it is official: "So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be. Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010." It is separate from the Android mobile OS, will run on both x86 and ARM processors, and is aimed primarily at web use. Other than that, details are scarce."

Submission + - Opera Unite

popeyethesailor writes: With the introduction of Google Wave, Live Mesh etc, web technology seems to be heading into a different direction; the action is moving to a more familiar place — your computer. Instead of a central aggregator providing an interface for people to collaborate on, the next generation is all about federation; your computer talks to your peers directly, and also hosts the interface with your peers communicate with you. None of this is completely new or innovative; IRC, Chat rooms, file sharing programs, etc have all done this in the past. However, the new platforms attempt to integrate all of these in a standards compliant fashion, and make this tech available to common folks.

Opera Unite is the latest in the line of federated collaboration platforms; their trick is to bundle the platform as part of the browser. There are detailed screenshots, and explanations in this article.

Submission + - Free broadband for India?

popeyethesailor writes: India's central minister for Communications Mr. Dayanidhi Maran, has said that Indians would soon have free broadband and telephone connections. The largest ISP in India is the state-owned BSNL, and its rates are already pretty low, starting from around $6 a month for a 2Mbps DSL link.

popeyethesailor writes: Redhat Legal has been busy of late. They've been sending out C&D letters to several consultants offering training services for Hibernate and JBoss. Apparently, it has to be HIBERNATE(R) Object Relational Mapping Software Training or, as another example, JBoss(R) Application Server Training.

Submission + - Announcing Crystal Space 1.0

Jorrit writes: "After nearly 10 years of development we finally release version 1.0 of Crystal Space. Crystal Space is an Open Source and portable 3D engine framework which runs on GNU/Linux, Windows, and MacOS/X. It is fully featured with support for vertex and fragment shaders, dynamic lighting and lightmaps, skeletal animation, physics, 3D sound, terrain engine, python support and much more.

Together with Crystal Space 1.0 we also release Crystal Entity Layer 1.0. This is a game layer on top of Crystal Space which makes it easier to develop games. Crystal Entity Layer is heavily oriented towards scripting (but also works in plain C++) and adds features like customizable third person camera, movement system, quest system, rule system, path finding and so on.

We would also like to announce a relatively new project called CELstart. To use Crystal Space and Crystal Entity Layer effectively you need to make your own C++ programs. If you download CELstart then you can start making full powered Crystal Space games by using only XML and/or Python scripts. It is by far the easiest way to make 3D games using Crystal Space.
