Journal Journal: Geocaching

I've discovered a new hobby... Geocaching.

If you've never heard of it, basically, someone hides a "treasure" somewhere on the planet (usually something like a Rubbermaid container with a few little trinkets inside, like McToys, and a logbook) and notes the coordinates of the container with a GPSr. The coordinates are then posted to the Geocaching website where abyone can look them up and go searching for the container.

Once (if) you find it, you sign the logbook, take one of the trinkets, and leave something behind for the next person to find.

It's a fun way to get outdoors and still keep a bit of geekiness going as well.

My daughter absolutely loves it. She has a blast going through the container after we find it and picking out a prize to keep.

If it weren't for those damn ticks though...

Journal Journal: So what is a sport anyway? 1

So what is a sport? I look at the winter olympics and only see a few "real" sports:
  • Cross country skiing (probably Alpine as well, but not freestyle)
  • Speed skating
  • Hockey
  • Bobsledding, luge and skeleton are sports for the first five seconds until they board their sled. Then it's just a video game as they steer.

We had this debate at work and one thing that we mostly agreed on was that if it is judged, then it's not a sport. So long, figure skating...

And curling is as much of a sport as bowling...

Journal Journal: Gotta love that figure skating...

So now the Russians are complaining that the judging was biased and that their skater should get a gold as well. Sigh.
Whether or not you think the Canadian pair should have gotten a medal or not, the IOC opened a Pandora's Box by giving them a gold. Now every country that has a beef will expect the same treatment.
