Also consider the full manufacturing impact on environment (chemical, energy, etc..), disposal cost (physical and environmental), maintenance, and other things almost always left out of these "gee whiz bang" energy solutions. I have yet to see a complete cradle to grave analysis on many of these, and some of the solutions being toted out there are self defeating to their own claims and purpose when looked at on the whole.
I've had BIOS systems set to start to boot in under 2 seconds, I don't see any reason for the fanfare, especially since I got it to that time by telling it to skip all self tests and quick boot. Yawn.
"install security software, update it by retrieving the latest definition file on another computer, and transferring that update to the new system, then running a full antivirus scan.""

Buy an Apple. my wifes iMac lasted ~10 years before we replaced it, and the only reason we replaced it was for a bigger screen for her. A current top end Mac Mini and a 20" Dell LCD will be relevant that long easily.
Bone up on OOP, learn Objective C etc.. it helps out in other areas of life as well. I'm a 41 YO CpE who learned on Borland C and am now teaching myself Objective C. "The Objective C Programming Language" book from Apple (free) has some good philosophy chapters that explain it rather well.
It is far broader than CS and can be applied in so many disciplines. It is where Computers were rooted, in systems, processes and controls.

I think ever since MS ripped the interface from Apple they're a bit leery of being "open" to it again.
Besides $99 will get you to developer status on the iPhone, anyone can do it.
What are they whining about?
