Apple Patent To Safeguard 911 Cellphone Calls 226

MojoKid writes "Engineers from Apple have applied for a patent on an 'emergency' mode for cell phones that would squeeze every last drop of energy out of the batteries. The phone would recognize emergency calls when the user dialed an emergency number, such as 911 in the United States. But another number could also be stored as an 'emergency number' on the phone (a spouse, child, or parent, for example) or the user could manually put the phone in emergency mode. The process would do a variety of things. It would disable 'non-essential hardware components' and applications on the phone, reduce power to the screen and potentially reduce the phone's processor speed. It also would make it harder to disconnect the call and enable 'emergency phrase buttons' on the phone."

Look at the duty cycle of your lawnmower and the car.

The lawnmower is used maybe 1 hour a week for two-thirds of the year, only in dry weather, and is kept under cover whilst not being used.

The car was probably used for 1-2 hours nearly every day, in all weather, and probably left on the street in all weather when not being used.

Given the same treatment, I wouldn't be surprised if the car lasted as long with similar maintenance (maybe a few replaced hoses more).

So have you ever been in a small plane "under positive control" (instrument flight rules) and very limited visibility?

Yes, I have. In the left seat. Any pilot who doesn't have the situational awareness to know where they are and what their "plan B" for deteriorating conditions (including lost ATC comms) shouldn't be there.

Just suppose that foreign crackers penetrated the air traffic control system or the power grid and either caused massive casualties due to lack of air traffic control...

Just how do you suppose they could cause "massive casualties" due to the lack of air traffic control? Every one of those planes has a pilot in command, who is quite able to fly the plane and land it safely without air traffic control lifting a finger. If flying IFR, the PIC also has a lost comms procedure to follow in case contact with ATC is lost.

I suggest you start by reading "Risk - The Science and Politics of Fear" by Dan Gardner, ISBN 978-0-7535-1553-2.

Try a different brand of Halogen. I've replaced one bulb in two years, but this was after a period where new bulbs would burn out in 3-4 weeks. The common factor was all of the new bulbs that burned out were made by Sylvania. None of my Phillips or GE bulbs have burned out, so I just don't buy Sylvania anymore.

That's a stupid cheap shot.

I see a lot of good, original work coming out of Microsoft Research. They do some very good, very fundamental computer science research. I am an ACM member, and it has seems to me that a considerable number of the papers that I've read on parallel programming recently have had one or more authors from MSR.

No disclaimer required. I don't work for Microsoft, never have, and don't want to (they've asked). Their products constantly frustrate me (as do MacOS X and Linux, which I both use daily, in different ways). But I won't deny their contributions either through research or in the marketplace.

Comment Still waiting for MacOS X PPC OO 3.0 (Score 1) 260

I would have been happy using the MacOS X OpenOffice 3.0 port...if an official version existed.

I'm using a PPC Mac, and the official download page for OO lists the latest version as 2.4.0. I believe there are alpha or beta ports on some other web sites, but that's not what the average user or the potential corporate user wants.

Forget about 3.1, how about an official port of 3.0?
