Submission + - Google testing experimental devices (cbslocal.com)

kodiaktau writes: Google is testing new experimental devices in employee homes. The company has applied for an experimental license with the FCC.

It is possible that the testing is related to the android@home framework, including interfacing with home appliances. Alternatively this could be another incarnation of Google TV, but nothing specific has surfaced yet.

Submission + - Yahoo Ousts Half Its Board (itworld.com)

itwbennett writes: "Yahoo's restructuring continued Tuesday with the ouster of 4 board members, including chairman Roy Bostock, according to an IDG News Service report. The move follows the resignation of Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang in January and gives investors something they'd been calling for, says analyst Greg Sterling: 'Investors have felt for a long time that the board was just rubber stamping what the leadership was doing. They want a reinvigorated board with some independence. People will wait to see what's different but I think this will be seen as a positive.'"

Submission + - Those Millions on Facebook? Some May Not Actually Visit Facebook (nytimes.com)

An anonymous reader writes: I always thought the Facebook metrics of active users were unbelievably high. Turns out, Facebook considers you an active user even if you don't visit the platform and log in.

From the article: In other words, every time you press the “Like” button on NFL.com, for example, you’re an “active user” of Facebook. Perhaps you share a Twitter message on your Facebook account? That would make you an active Facebook user, too. Have you ever shared music on Spotify with a friend? You’re an active Facebook user.

Submission + - Wanna play rough? - California Laws Relgulating Pe (blogspot.com)

MyUniqueDot writes: "The Thanksgiving evening pepper spray incident at a Los Angeles area Wal-Mart raised the bar on "shop 'til you drop." The woman responsible for this has turned herself in to police, but they are still mulling charges. If she is charged, California has specific statutory provisions related to pepper spray offenses. If she is charged, she just might be in big trouble. This article sets out, in brief, the relevant statutory provisions, and has a neat little video from "Scarface" that sets the tone . . ."

Submission + - Printing a human kidney (printerdiary.com)

jummamaster writes: "At a TED conference in March 2011 Surgeon Anthony Atala showed the audience a standard HP printer printing a human bone, which was then implanted in a patient in need of a new one. I would call that amazing, however his revealing that they're working on a sort of a giant flatbed scanner that would operate while the patient is lying flat on a bed. And their game plan is to scan an injured area, and then 'print' a repair directly onto the human body."
