OK, so lets say I follow your logic, what is it left to do, since I do not like PM work, besides being a manager? Cause I really do not see any more options to advance, unless I completely change career, as in sales men or whatever.

But how do you handle PM work without knowing the inner languages? I mean, I have done it, but I feel I'm at a disadvantage.

When kid my mother got me into a LOGO class. I liked it very much, got a TI994/A. Got an IBM PC, an older friend tought me BASIC. Then I started learning by myself most of the languages and all.

In today's economy? Why not make two resumes: PM and Programmer. If PM skills pay the bills, hop on it and work on programming as a side hobby. If the right Programmer position comes up and the pay is good, consider it but don't set yourself up for failure or take too large a risk if your home/dependents/nestegg are at stake.

That is what I have done so far, but I really do not like PM work. Thanks for your comments.

Thanks. I have thought of this myself. Buy I also feel like I won't be able to do the best design, if I do not have a basic understanding of the technologies involved. Maybe I'm wrong. So, while I would love to do web architecture design, I steel feel the need to know.

Thanks. But when I asked the question, it was intended to be more like, "if i start learning web dev now, would I have a use for it"? And I ask because of the things said so far, being too expensive, etc.

Thanks. Totally agree. I have participated for ome time on OS projects and such. And I would probably start learning web dev soon, as I do not see a clear career path for me, besides being a PM or a manager.

Well, PM work takes at least the same time it takes working as a dev, and it is boring! About the year thing, what mcgrew replied. I can probably do the learning on 2/3 months (i assume), but I mean to be more than good, at least a year. Maybe less, maybe more. Do not know.

Thanks for your comments. So you are suggesting I learn JavaScrip/AJAX, and I assume also HTML/XHTML, but shouldn't I also learn either PHP, Python, Ruby? I have db2/oracle knowledge, and have even used some MySQL, so that should be easier.

Yeah, I also like Ruby better, but i heard is not scalable and most of the hostings come with PHP, and not Ruby. Is this correct?

Well, right, I plan on concentrate ore on the non designer chores ;). It is crazy how this web thing is like going back to the time we had to develop our interfaces by code, like people do now with web techs.

Thanks. For me the options are either desktop (Java/C#) or web. But i feel all the cool things nowadays are on the web, so i tend to think more of the latter. But i'm afraid off all the different technologies that i would need to learn, and the time it would take. I mean, if i want to program in Java, more or less i learn Java, as when I wanted to learn Delphi, I just did. But with web, you have to learn HTML, XHTML, CSS and PHP (to make something useful). It just looks as it would take me much more time than to learn a single thing.
