Comment How about UTC? (Score 1) 149

I live in Australia and I always know what my offset is from UTC. I assume most people around the world know theirs too.

What I never know is my offset from PT, CT or ET. Does anyone else have that problem too?

I guess if this problem was isolated to the U.S.A. then only using local time definitions is OK.

Comment So patch it. (Score 1) 236

I'm not sure this is too big a deal. You hear about the problem and you patch it. Both the systems I have that are Internet facing use distros that had new bashes available very quickly. Yesterday morning I wasted 15 minutes on this. We'll now be reading about it for the next month.

I guess the problem will remain for those that don't patch.

I live in Canberra Australia where billboards are not allowed. I've been here for 15 years and now when I leave town and go to say, Sydney, the billboards drive me crazy. They're such a blot on the landscape. Plus now it seems that every second one is trying to give me a boner. Not by showing me beautiful women but chemically!

Canada's Online Surveillance Bill: Section 34 "Opens Door To Big Brother" 178

Saint Aardvark writes "Canada's proposed online surveillance bill looked bad enough when it was introduced, but it gets worse: Section 34 allows access to any telco place or equipment, and to any information contained there — with no restrictions, no warrants, and no review. From the article: 'Note that such all-encompassing searches require no warrant, and don't even have to be in the context of a criminal investigation. Ostensibly, the purpose is to ensure that the ISP is complying with the requirements of the act — but nothing in the section restricts the inspector to examining or seizing only information bearing upon that issue. It's still "any" information whatsoever.'"

Comment Pure BS (Score 1) 729

This is pure bullshit. This crap about religiosity being genetic is pushing some atheistic barrow where it shouldn't be. Debating the existence of God belongs in a philosophical discussion not just assuming that one opinion is correct. Religion bashing is pretty popular among stupid geeks who are just sheep when it comes to anything beyond reductionist dogma.
