I bought one of these as I read tons of books on my Kindle. I bought it for the ability to surf web so I didn't have to lug my laptop around. It's got apps so my daughter is happy with it. I can stream movies from Amazon on it. I use it daily and as an entertainment device, it is outstanding. Web pages are slow to load, but other than that, it is doing exactly what I bought it for. Battery life could be better, but such is life... I have no need to root it, as I bought it for what it can do, not what it could do.. Seeing as most of the users who buy this use it similar to myself, I'd say it was a great buy!

Comment Re:Good "Why SOPA is bad for non-geeks" article? (Score 2) 513

Bullshit. That's exactly what SOPA is intended for. It's the first step on the way to giving the government/corporations the ability to stifle dissent. A simple claim of "His site has links to pirated material, your honor" and a pile of 100's and lo and behold, here's your order to pull the site and seize the domain. NO EVIDENCE NEEDED. That's the scary thing about this. How many judges out there do you think are going to actually check it out before rubber stamping it.

What do you mean chance, .. are you all claiming that live only exists on this planet in all those universes ? I mean they might not be intelligent, but life will find a way no matter what, thinking life only exists here is just plain stupid. I'm not claiming they came here to abduct people and shit like that, just suggesting out of all the solar systems out there, do any of you really believe that life only exists here ? To me that's just being naive.

Not only that, but if mankind is the best the universe has come up with so far, it's a pretty piss poor example! We are certainly not the "pinnacle of civilization".

Letting Customers Decide Pricing On Game DLC 156

An anonymous reader writes "How much should game developers be charging for DLC? It seems that one indie dev has decided to carry out a unique experiment. The latest expansion pack for Gratuitous Space Battles is priced at $5.99 — or is it? It turns out there is both a standard ($5.99) version and a discount version ($2.99). And the difference between them is... nothing. The buyers have been left to make their own decisions on whether or not they should pay full price, and send more money to the developer, or treat themselves to a deserved discount. The buy page even lists comparisons of national incomes, average salaries and even the price of sausages to help buyers make up their minds. Will this catch on? Will Microsoft start asking us whether or not we should get a discount and trust us to answer honestly?"

A Hyper-Velocity Impact In the Asteroid Belt? 114

astroengine writes "Astronomers have spotted something rather odd in the asteroid belt. It looks like a comet, but it's got a circular orbit, similar to an asteroid. Whether it's an asteroid or a comet, it has a long, comet-like tail, suggesting something is being vented into space. Some experts think it could be a very rare comet/asteroid hybrid being heated by the sun, but there's an even more exciting possibility: It could be the first ever observation of two asteroids colliding in the asteroid belt."

Moscow Police Watch Pre-Recorded Scenes On Surveillance Cams 114

An anonymous reader writes "During several months of 2009, Moscow police looked at fake pictures displayed on their monitors instead of what was supposed to be video from the city surveillance cams. The subcontractor providing the cams was paid on the basis of 'the number of working cams,' so he delivered pre-cooked pictures stored on his servers. The camera company CEO has been arrested."
