You can't have it both ways.

If defenders of The One True God are allowed to resort to such shenanigans, defenders of The One True Dog are free to do so as well.

Which is it going to be?

Let's just use regular logical reasoning here on slashdot. In this case, you may agree that my belief in a creator of the universe isn't that silly, and does no harm to anyone.

So please stop picking on religion in general, and stick to criticizing specifically the things you don't like about it. You wouldn't say medicine is silly because homeopathy is, would you?

Your answer just proves one of the original claims in this thread: that religion does not get fair treatment on slashdot. You had to apply these "paralogical" arguments, which you admit are stupid, to prove your point.

Could you please just apply to religion the same type of logical reasoning that you use with everything else?

Now, if you want to talk about how the reasoning some religions use is wrong, please go ahead. But use examples and proper logic. I'm not saying that everything is right about religions. But you can't say everything is wrong, either. And some beliefs are not as silly as you try to make them look.

The entire point of the study is that religion doesn't give anyone better moral values, and gives worse moral values on average than its absence.

My point was that the study does not necessarily prove that religion gives worse moral values on average than its absence, because we can't study how the people from a religious society of today would act if most of them suddenly became atheists.

Maybe the causality in the correlation found by the study is not religion -> poverty and worse moral values, but poverty -> religion and worse moral values.

An atheistic ethical system is based on the idea that the individual acts in a certain way because that is the best way of constructing the society in which they wish to live. A theistic ethical system is based on the idea that you act in a certain way because a creator said so and that you will go to hell or reincarnate as a fish if you don't. Which do you think provides a more stable society?

I agree with you that an atheistic ethical system would be better.

But being religious doesn't exclude adopting an ethical system that isn't based on religion, like the one you describe. What is wrong with acting in some way both because you believe it is good for society and because you think it will please the creator?

On the other hand, getting rid of religion does not guarantee that the people will adopt any ethical system at all. I don't think the assholes that are now religious would become any better if they suddenly became atheists.

This is probably caused by the fact that atheists are usually intelligent people (not all intelligent people are atheists, though).

We don't know for sure how things would be without religion, but I think it would be worse. Atheism won't make anyone smarter or give anyone better moral values.

Why Game Developers Should Support OS X and Linux 283

kevind23 writes "Although Mac OS X and Linux have a small (but growing) market share, Jeff from Wolfire Games argues that supporting non-Windows platforms can lead to a huge increase in game sales. Using their popular game Lugaru as an example, he shows how less-popular platforms, or more specifically, their userbase can be a powerful advertising force. This can lead to a dramatic increase in popularity and exposure, which usually means a large boost in overall sales. The short article is an interesting read, especially for those working in game development and sales."

If anyone posted that God has spoken to him, he would still be modded off the page. That person would even be considered a loon by most of us religious persons. For most people, religion is a set of moral values combined with the belief that the world has an intelligent creator.

Also, it's not fair to compare this belief that an intelligent being created our universe (which can be neither proved nor disproved) to the belief that someone's dog is that creator (which can be easily disproved).
Perhaps a more fair comparison would be between the belief in an intelligent creator and string theory. Neither of them can be actively proved or disproved. Yet we don't consider the scientists working on s.t. loons if they think it is true.

How Small Can Computers Get? Computing in a Molecule 143

ScienceDaily on what the future might bring for atomic-scale computing: "Joachim, the head of the CEMES Nanoscience and Picotechnology Group (GNS), is currently coordinating a team of researchers from 15 academic and industrial research institutes in Europe whose groundbreaking work on developing a molecular replacement for transistors has brought the vision of atomic-scale computing a step closer to reality. Their efforts, a continuation of work that began in the 1990s, are today being funded by the European Union in the Pico-Inside project. ... The team has managed to design a simple logic gate with 30 atoms that perform the same task as 14 transistors, while also exploring the architecture, technology, and chemistry needed to achieve computing inside a single molecule and to interconnect molecules."

Apple Sued Over iPhone Browser 225

SpuriousLogic writes "A Los Angeles real estate developer is suing Apple for patent infringement over the way the iPhone navigates Web sites. The suit, which was filed on behalf of EMG Technology, seeks unspecified damages. EMG Technology is a company that holds the patents of Elliot Gottfurcht, the real estate developer, as well as Marlo Longstreet and Grant Gottfurcht. The company claims that the iPhone infringes on patent 7,441,196 — a patent that was approved only last month, after a filing process that began on March 13, 2006. That patent is for an invention that displays 'on-line content reformatted from a webpage in a hypertext markup language (HTML) format into an extensible markup language (XML) format to generate a sister site.' This sister site is a simplified version of the original site that is then displayed on any number of devices — including cell phones, EMG says."
