Xmarks can and should be replaced by a very small shell script.

Of course, because every end-user totally has the know-how and desire to write and operate a shell script to sync their bookmarks. Not everyone is like us. Most people just want their software to work with minimal hassle and tinkering.

I liked Xmarks because it was easy to use and had features that nobody else had. Hopefully they'll open-source their code before they go under, so somebody else can pick up where they left off. If not, I may just end up firing up an Xmarks server of my own to sync my bookmarks to.

Possible Treatment For Ebola 157

RedEaredSlider writes "Researchers at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases have found a class of drugs that could provide treatment for Ebola and Marburg hemorrhagic fever. The new drugs are called 'antisense' compounds, and they allow the immune system to attack the viruses before they can do enough damage to kill the patient. Travis Warren, research scientist at USAMRIID, said while the work is still preliminary -— the drugs have been tested only on primates — the results are so far promising. In the case of Ebola, five of eight monkeys infected with the virus lived, and with Marburg, all survived. The drugs were developed as part of a program to deal with possible bioterrorist threats, in partnership with AVI Biopharma."

Glaxo Open Sources Malaria Drug Search Data 80

smellsofbikes writes "GlaxoSmithKline, the world's second-largest pharmaceutical company, is putting thousands of possible malaria-treating drugs into the public domain in a move that the Wall Street Journal calls a 'Linux approach' to pharmaceutical screening. Andrew Witty, who is described as the boss of GSK, says the company thinks it is 'imperative to earn the trust of society, not just by meeting expectations but by exceeding them.' Of course, synthesis or discovery of new chemicals is cheap compared to efficacy and qualification studies, but this is a refreshing change from not handing out any information until after everything is patented."

See, this is why I've never understood the rule that prohibits pilots from carrying firearms. Believe me, if a terrorist really wants to get through that door, he's going to do it one way or another. Just the other day, I just about tore the gate off my fence with one kick. A door just isn't going to cut it. It just doesn't make much sense that we allow pilots to drive hundreds of tons of steel and explosive fuel around the sky, but we won't allow them to be armed in the cockpit.

I mean, come on, the 9-11 guys used *box-cutters* to take over the plane, for god's sake. If even *one* person had had a gun on those flights, the number of dead bodies leaving the plane would have been much, much lower.

Just a thought.

Australian Government Delays Internet Filter Legislation 255

An anonymous reader writes "It seems the Australian federal government is being forced to delay the introduction of its proposed and much-hated, much-maligned Internet filter. It will not be introduced in the next two sittings of parliament, which realistically delays it until after the next election. News on withdrawing the filter, which was a promise from the previous election, has disappointed lobbying groups such as the Australian Christian Lobby."

Comment What about Windows Error Reports? (Score 1) 244

Does that count as a bug report? I sometimes click the send button, but since it seems pretty useless in terms of actually getting my Windows bugs fixed, I usually just close the window without sending it. Is there any real reason to submit those things, or are they really as pointless as they seem to me? Any thoughts?

Anyway, I probably end up submitting Windows Error Reports a few dozen times a year, so that would definitely raise my total if they count as real bug reports.

Japanese Turning To "Therapeutic Ringtones" 75

indiavision writes "A host of young Japanese are drawn to the allure of 'therapeutic ringtones' — a genre of melodies that promises to ease a range of day-to-day gripes, from chronic insomnia to a rotten hangover. Developed by Matsumi Suzuki, the head of the Japan Ringing Tone Laboratory, an eight-year-old subsidiary of the Japan Acoustic Laboratory, the tones are a hit with housewives as well as teenagers."

JPL Background Check Case Reaches Supreme Court 112

Dthief writes "A long-running legal battle between the United States government and a group of 29 scientists and engineers of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, has now reached the US Supreme Court." At issue: mandatory background checks for scientists and engineers working at JPL, which they allege includes snooping into their sexual orientation, as well as their mental and physical health.

BlackBerry Bold Tops Radiation Ranking 189

geek4 writes with this excerpt from eWeek Europe: "Data from the Environmental Working Group places the BlackBerry Bold 9700 as the mobile device with the highest legal levels of cell phone radiation among popular smartphones. Research In Motion's BlackBerry Bold 9700 scores the highest among popular smartphones for exposing users to the highest legal levels of cell phone radiation, according to the latest 2010 Environmental Working Group ranking. Following the Bold 9700 are the Motorola Droid, the LG Chocolate and Google's HTC Nexus One. The rankings still put the phones well within federal guidelines and rules."

I've noticed the same thing and I find it just as annoying, especially when you've used up half of the rounds and have to blast the remaining ammo into the ground to get a full clip. However, I was recently pleased to notice that Treyarch managed to get the M1's reloading right in Call of Duty: World at War. So far that's the only game I've played that lets you reload the Garand. Does anybody know of any other games that don't fail in this regard?
