OH Senate Passes Bill Banning Human-Animal Hybrids 197

An anonymous reader writes "The sci-fi movie Splice seems to have scared the Ohio's State Senator Steve Buehrer. The Ohio Senate has passed Sen. Buehrer's bill banning 'the creation, transportation, or receipt of a human-animal hybrid, the transfer of a nonhuman embryo into a human womb, and the transfer of a human embryo into a nonhuman womb.' So much for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."

Cassandra and Voldemort Benchmarked 45

kreide33 writes "Key/Value storage systems are gaining in popularity, much because of features such as easy scalability and automatic replication. However, there are several to choose from and performance is an important deciding factor. This article compares the performance of two of the most well-known projects, Cassandra and Voldemort, using several different mixes of access types, and compares both throughput and latency."

Comment Marriott charges for Internet (Score 2, Insightful) 157

I recently stayed in a Marriott that charged $12.95 a day (noon-to-noon) for Internet and long distance calling. I took my Pre, fired up Mobile Hotspot and went 'FU' to the hotel. In these days of free ubiquitous Internet, it is offensive that any place charges for Internet access, whether it be wired or wireless.

Hal was charged with embezzlement for allegedly bilking his company out of millions and placed under house arrest. Hal casually mentions to Malcolm that he has played hooky from work on Fridays for years. The evidence presented in court against him was that all the events occurred on Fridays. Once Malcolm realizes this, he has his father find all of his pictures and tickets of him playing hooky, which were time stamped on the Fridays that the embezzlement took place, thus showing that there was no way Hal could have been embezzling money. Of course, Lois was furious that he had been skipping work on Fridays and now since he had admitted to skipping work, had lost his job.

Submission + - ACLU objects to police scanning license plates (ap.org) 1

dustman81 writes: The ACLU is objecting to the Springdale, Ohio police department using an automated license plate scanner on their patrol cars to locate stolen vehicles or those who's owners are wanted on felony warrants. The scanner can read 900 license plates an hour traveling at highway speeds. So far, the scanner has located 95 stolen cars and helped locate 111 wanted felons. The locations of the license plates scanned are tagged with GPS data so when the data is downloaded, it can cross-referenced on a map. If the plate is wanted, the times and locations of where it was scanned can be referenced. This system is also in use in British Columbia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENGY1CD9y_4
