Submission + - NPD: Samsung Galaxy Tab sales low enough that HP o (electronista.com)

syngularyx writes: NPD shows HP leading US tablets for most of 2011

HP, not Samsung, was the ruler of non-iPad tablets in the US for the first ten months of the year, the NPD Group said in a new study. With just 1.2 million tablets sold at retail across every company outside of Apple, HP was the leader in the country at 17 percent, or 204,000, sold between its launch and October. The low count suggests that the fire sale $99 TouchPad, not HP's Windows range, was the sales leader by going on clearance.

Submission + - The iPhone 5 Was Real, Says A Source Who Played Wi (businessinsider.com)

syngularyx writes: Remember how disappointed everyone was back in October when Apple announced an iPhone 4S and not an iPhone 5?

Everyone had been led to believe by scores of reports that there would be a revolutionary new iPhone with a bigger screen and a new slimmer look.

Well, it turns out the "iPhone 5" – or at least, a fully redesigned iPhone – was real and it was scrapped only months before the iPhone 4S was announced.

Apple

Submission + - Apple confirms no current plans to bring Siri to o (appleinsider.com)

syngularyx writes: Apple's engineering unit has reportedly confirmed that the company currently has "no plans" to support its Siri personal assistant feature on older devices, according to a person familiar with the matter.

AppleInsider obtained on Tuesday an email, allegedly from Apple in response to a bug report, with the company stating its plans to keep Siri and iPhone 4S exclusive for the time being.

"Engineering has provided the following feedback regarding this issue: Siri only works with iPhone 4S and we currently have no plans to support older devices," the email read.

Apple unveiled Siri last month at its iPhone 4S event. The voice recognition personal assistant is based off technology the company acquired in 2010. The feature quickly made waves because of its advanced natural language processing abilities.

But, the service is currently in beta, a fact that users were reminded of last week when it experienced widespread outages.

Android

Submission + - Revolutionary User Interfaces (asymco.com)

syngularyx writes: A few years ago, around the middle of the last decade, the mobile phone market was characterized by the rivalry between a few established vendors. These were Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson. These incumbent companies had a broad portfolio of devices including smartphones and feature phones and basic phones. Many also sold networking equipment and were deeply engaged with their customers, network operators.

There was also a set of entrants who offered only smartphones. They were quirky. HTC was a a prominent "ODM" or original design manufacturer who built phones for companies who added their brands and sold and supported the product. HTC made phones and PDAs for operator brands and for some large PC companies. It also began to sell phones under its own brand. RIM was also offering products that had evolved from pagers into email appliances with added voice capabilities. But RIM's products were not very good as phones. Voice was so poorly integrated that many people carried both a BlackBerry and a voice phone. Then there was Palm with something called a Treo which promised many things but did not quite deliver.

In 2007 something happened which changed the industry. It took a few years to even realize it was happening but by the time it was obvious, it had changed to such a degree that huge companies found themselves in financial distress.

Cloud

Submission + - iCloud automatically syncs files à la Dropbox (macworld.com)

syngularyx writes: iCloud's 'Documents in the Cloud' doesn't let you do much except upload iWork files for use with iOS devices. To use those documents on another Mac, you have to download the file using the iCloud web interface.

Poking around in the ~/Library folder, you can find a 'Mobile Documents' folder that is used for syncing iWork documents. But it turns out you are not limited to iWork files if you just want to sync between Macs (i.e. no iOS use).

If you are using iCloud and have the 'Documents & Data' option selected in the preference pane, you can navigate to ~/Library/Mobile Documents. Depending on whether or not you've used iWork and synced documents to iCloud, you may or may not find folders there for each of the iWork applications (e.g. com~apple~numbers).

This doesn't really matter. What is of use is that any files put into the ~/Library/Mobile Documents folder will automatically upload to iCloud and push to any other Mac you have that is signed in to the same iCloud account and has the 'Document & Data' iCloud preference checked. Lion even notifies you of version conflicts and allows you to resolve them when you open the document.

Android

Submission + - Steve Jobs made a pledge to destroy Android (yahoo.com)

arcite writes: In another preview of his forthcoming biography, it seems Steve Jobs made the destruction of Android one of his final goals;

"I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong," Jobs said. "I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."

Jobs used an expletive to describe Android and Google Docs, Google's Internet-based word processing program. In a subsequent meeting with Schmidt at a Palo Alto, Calif., cafe, Jobs told Schmidt that he wasn't interested in settling the lawsuit, the book says.

"I don't want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I won't want it. I've got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that's all I want." The meeting, Isaacson wrote, resolved nothing."

Submission + - Gaddafi killed as Libya's revolt claims hometown (reuters.com)

syngularyx writes: Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi died of wounds suffered on Thursday as fighters battling to complete an eight-month-old uprising against his rule overran his hometown Sirte, Libya's interim rulers said.

His killing, which came swiftly after his capture near Sirte, is the most dramatic single development in the Arab Spring revolts that have unseated rulers in Egypt and Tunisia and threatened the grip on power of the leaders of Syria and Yemen.

beaverdownunder writes: (Reuters) — Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi died of wounds suffered in his capture near his hometown of Sirte on Thursday, a senior NTC military official said.

National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters earlier that Gaddafi was captured and wounded in both legs at dawn on Thursday as he tried to flee in a convoy which NATO warplanes attacked.

"He was also hit in his head," the official said. "There was a lot of firing against his group and he died."

There was no independent confirmation of his remarks.

syngularyx writes: Research In Motion's first QNX-powered BlackBerry will make its debut in the first quarter of 2012, according to a new report by the blog Boy Genius Report.

On top of that, the device is apparently code-named "Colt" which tells you everything you need to know about RIM's hopes: After months and months of executives talking up the QNX-powered "superphones" in development, anything less than racehorse-like market performance will come as a considerable blow to the company's fortunes.
